How Rogers began

Rogers was established in 1883 after a railroad was built through the area and incorporated as a village in 1895, named for founder T. G. Rogers. The same year the village was founded, Mount Hope College opened on Highland Avenue; after a fire in 1894, brothers Asher A. and Charles Burleigh Galbreath bought and rebuilt it, but the Ohio Attorney General investigated the school in 1900 for granting degrees based on fees alone, with no attendance or examination requirement, and the college lost its charter and closed. Long past its brief spell as a college town, Rogers today is known mainly for the Rogers Community Auction and Flea Market, a 250-acre market active since 1955 in neighboring Elkrun Township, and for its own tiny population of under 200.

Settled 1883, platted 1883, incorporated 1895, by T. G. Rogers.

Where the name comes from

Named for founder T. G. Rogers.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, camp or burial site within present Rogers' boundaries. The village was not founded until 1883, nearly a century after the region's Native land claims were ceded under the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

The college that sold diplomas by mail

Mount Hope College opened on Highland Avenue in Rogers the same year the village itself was founded, 1883, and after a fire damaged the school in 1894, local brothers Asher A. and Charles Burleigh Galbreath -- one later an Ohio state senator, the other later the State Library of Ohio's librarian -- bought and rebuilt it, lending the institution some genuine civic respectability. That respectability did not survive close inspection. In 1900 the Ohio Attorney General opened an investigation and found the college had been conferring academic degrees based simply on fees the student paid, with no requirement to actually attend classes or sit an examination -- a diploma mill operating, in effect, out of a small Columbiana County village. The college lost its charter and closed, and today only a single 1910 photograph of the building and the memory of the scandal remain of Rogers' brief run as a college town.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Rogers, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

49,125 days of records, 1892-05-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
