How Painesville Township, Lake County began

Painesville Township took in the first settlements of what became Lake County. John Walworth of Connecticut reached the Grand River on April 8, 1800 with his family and built the first log house, and General Edward Paine, who had passed through in 1798 and bought a thousand acres in 1799, arrived with his wife and eight children in late April 1800, giving the township and the city its name; Anson Sessions, a veteran of Wayne's army, made the first land sale that October. Abraham Skinner and Eleazar Paine bought 2,300 acres that took in Fairport in 1803. Paine is said to have come with a party of 66 settlers. The township surrounds the city of Painesville, includes the harbor villages of Fairport Harbor and Grand River on its lakeshore, and had 20,453 residents in 2020.

Settled 1800 (General Edward Paine's party of 66 settlers), by General Edward Paine.

Where the name comes from

The township, like the city of Painesville that grew from it, is named for General Edward Paine (1746-1841), the Connecticut Revolutionary War veteran who led the area's first organized party of settlers into the Western Reserve in 1800 and later served in the Northwest Territory's legislature.

Before the town

The 1879 history of Geauga and Lake counties says the land east of the Cuyahoga was ceded to the United States in the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh by the Wyandot, Delaware (Lenape), Chippewa (Ojibwe) and Ottawa, confirmed at Fort Harmar in 1789, and that after Wayne's victory the Indians again yielded their claims to lands east of the Cuyahoga at the Treaty of Greenville (1795); the Treaty of Fort Industry (July 4, 1805) bought the Indian title to the Reserve west of the Cuyahoga. It gives no village in the township, but notes that the settlers' 1800 voyage across the ice, Walworth's tent on the bank of the Grand River, and a pioneer sugar trade with 'western Indians' all belong to a country the Indians were leaving. The county's one well-documented prehistoric earthwork, Indian Point, lies in neighboring LeRoy Township.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Lenape (Delaware), Ojibwe (Chippewa), Ottawa.

Stories

The railroad general and the suffragist, side by side

The Italianate house Charles Clement Jennings built in Painesville Township in 1870 for his daughter Frances held two of the era's more consequential lives under one roof. Frances's husband, John Stephen 'Jack' Casement, had risen from major to brigadier general in the Civil War commanding the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and just four years before the house went up he and his brother Daniel had taken the contract to lay 1,044 miles of Union Pacific track for the first transcontinental railroad, finishing the job at Promontory, Utah in 1869. Frances Jennings Casement, meanwhile, built a reform career of her own: in 1883 she organized the Painesville Equal Rights Association, and from 1885 to 1888 she served as the first president of the Ohio Woman Suffrage Association, working alongside Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton on a cause the nation would not fully realize until the Nineteenth Amendment passed in 1920; she died in 1928. The house the Jack Casements built survives on what is now Casement Avenue, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975.

Across the ice of Lake Erie

On February 20, 1800 John Walworth, a Connecticut seaman turned landowner, set out from Buffalo with his wife Julianna and their children, two sleighs and a hired man, driving on the ice of Lake Erie. The first night they camped about fifty or sixty rods from the shore abreast of Cattaraugus Creek, with fire-light on the hemlock boughs and the owl and wolf calling from the forest; the 'Barr manuscript' quoted by the 1879 history calls the scene grand and impressive. Walworth left his family at Erie, returned to Buffalo for his goods, then drove along the shore to his two thousand acres at the Grand River, where he lived two weeks in a tent on the bank, the first habitation of white men in Painesville Township. His family came by flatboat and arrived April 8, 1800. General Edward Paine, who had come through in 1798, arrived with his own family later that month and built a cabin a mile north, and the town was named for him. Walworth left for Cleveland in 1806 and died there in 1812.
