How Concord Township, Lake County began

Concord Township was set off from Painesville Township on March 8, 1822 and named for the Revolutionary War battle site, though its land had been settled two decades earlier: Thomas Jordan built the township's first log cabin in 1802 at a crossroads that became known as Wilson's Corners. Early industry clustered in the township's hollows -- gristmills, a woolen-turning mill, an iron furnace company -- while its high ground at Little Mountain drew nineteenth-century hotels and resorts. Today Concord is a growing, largely residential Lake County township bordering Mentor and Painesville.

Settled 1802 (Thomas Jordan, first permanent settler; first log cabin), incorporated March 8, 1822 (set off from Painesville Township), by Thomas Jordan; Daniel Colt of Norwich, Connecticut was the original land purchaser.

Where the name comes from

The township was named for Concord, Massachusetts, site of the 1775 battle that opened the Revolutionary War -- a common naming pattern among Western Reserve townships settled by New Englanders.

Before the town

No named historic-era Native village or documented archaeological site within Concord Township was found in the sources consulted. A local history compiled by the Concord Township Historical Society places the township's Connecticut Land Company survey in 1796, when Moses Cleaveland's survey party passed through the township's future lands, and its own timeline dates Native cession of 'most of Ohio for settlement' to 1795, matching the county-wide Treaty of Greenville. Lake County's broader Native history includes the documented Whittlesey-culture site at Indian Point in neighboring LeRoy Township.

Timeline

  1. — Moses Cleaveland's Connecticut Land Company survey party passes through the future Concord Township.
  2. — A construction contract for Girdled Road, one of the Western Reserve's earliest roads, is signed for $2,600.
  3. — Thomas Jordan builds the township's first log cabin and becomes its first permanent settler, at a crossroads later called Wilson's Corners.
  4. — Concord Township is formally set off from Painesville Township, then still part of Geauga County, and named for the Massachusetts battle site.
  5. — The Incorporate Iron Furnace Company is formed in the township.
  6. — Eber D. Howe, the Painesville newspaper editor and Underground Railroad conductor, moves to Concord Township's Liberty Hollow, which serves as an Underground Railroad station.
  7. — Lake County is established, folding in Concord Township, and the township organizes its own school system; the Old Stone Schoolhouse is built on Ravenna Road for $200.
  8. — The Little Mountain Eagle Hotel opens, part of a run of nineteenth-century hotels drawing visitors to the township's high ground at Little Mountain.
  9. — The restored Old Stone Schoolhouse opens as the township's historical site and history center.

Stories

An editor's hollow becomes a station on the Railroad

Eber D. Howe was already a well-known figure in the Western Reserve by the time he moved to a wooded ravine in Concord Township in 1838 -- he had founded the Painesville Telegraph newspaper and, a few years earlier, published Mormonism Unvailed, one of the first book-length critical accounts of the young Latter Day Saint movement then headquartered just a few miles away in Kirtland. At what came to be called Liberty Hollow, Howe put his convictions to more direct use: the site is recorded in the township's own historical timeline as a station on the Underground Railroad, part of the same network of hidden rooms and sympathetic households that ran through Painesville's Rider's Inn and on toward Lake Erie and Canada. The hollow's mills and dye works gave it an ordinary industrial cover; its part in helping people escape slavery was necessarily kept quiet at the time and survives today mainly in local memory and the township's own compiled history.
