How Noble Township, Defiance County began

Noble Township lies just west of the city of Defiance and holds two small unincorporated settlements, Brunersburg and the Dey Road Bridge crossing of the Tiffin River. Brunersburg was platted in 1834 by Daniel Bruner and had its own post office from 1837 to 1895; the Dey Road Bridge, an iron Pratt through-truss span built in 1906, still stands nearby and is listed on the National Register for its engineering, though it has been closed to vehicle traffic for years.

Settled 1834 (Brunersburg), platted 1834 (Brunersburg), by Daniel Bruner (Brunersburg).

Where the name comes from

Noble Township shares its name with townships in Auglaize and Noble counties; no source specific to this township's own naming was found. Brunersburg, its main settlement, is named for founder Daniel Bruner.

Stories

The bridge that outlived its traffic

West of Defiance, where Dey Road crosses the Tiffin River, an iron Pratt through-truss bridge has stood since 1906, built by the Massillon Bridge Company to replace an earlier crossing near Brunersburg -- a toll bridge from 1835 that floodwaters eventually destroyed. A year after the new bridge went up, a federal surveyor bolted a benchmark to its northwest abutment, and for decades it carried ordinary township traffic. It has since been closed to vehicles, but pedestrians can still cross it, and in 1999 the National Register of Historic Places listed it for its engineering rather than for any famous event connected to it -- a quiet, working iron bridge that simply outlasted most of its 1906 contemporaries.
