How Defiance began

Defiance was laid out in 1822 on the site of Fort Defiance, the stronghold General Anthony Wayne built in August 1794 at the confluence of the Maumee and Auglaize rivers after destroying the Native settlement cluster called the Glaize. The town became Defiance County's seat when the county organized in 1845, incorporated as a city in 1881, and grew around the Miami and Erie Canal's turn south toward Cincinnati and, later, Defiance College. Today it is the county's largest city and its government and commercial center.

Settled 1794 (Fort Defiance, military), platted 1822, incorporated 1881.

Where the name comes from

Named for Fort Defiance, built by Anthony Wayne's army in August 1794. Sources disagree on the exact origin of the name: Wikipedia's article on the city has Wayne telling General Charles Scott, "I defy the English, Indians, and all the devils of hell to take it," while Wikipedia's article on the fort attributes the same declaration to Scott himself.

Before the town

Modern Defiance occupies the site of the Glaize, a cluster of at least seven Shawnee, Delaware (Lenape) and Miami villages at the Maumee-Auglaize confluence that reached a peak population of about two thousand people in 1792 and hosted a major multi-nation council that October. Blue Jacket's own village stood a mile up the Auglaize from its mouth; the principal village, on the point where Fort Defiance was later built, held the community's British and French-Canadian traders, among them George Ironsides. An Iroquois widow and priestess named Cooh-coo-che lived in a bark cabin on the north bank of the Maumee directly across from that point, and it was in her household that eleven-year-old captive O. M. Spencer spent eight months in 1792. Wayne's army destroyed the Glaize in August 1794 and built Fort Defiance on its ashes; the 1795 Treaty of Greenville then reserved a six-square-mile enclave around the new fort to the United States, the seed of the town platted there in 1822. A local tradition, commemorated by the city's own Pontiac Park at the confluence, holds that the Ottawa leader Pontiac was born at this spot or at a nearby Odawa village on the Maumee -- Wikipedia's article on Pontiac treats this as one of several unverifiable traditions about a birth year and place no contemporary document records.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Miami, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga), Ottawa (Odawa), Mohawk (Haudenosaunee).

Stories

A fort built on a ruined capital

Where downtown Defiance now sits, the Maumee and Auglaize rivers meet at a point the French called Au Glaize, and by the early 1790s it was one of the most important Native settlements in the Northwest: a cluster of at least seven villages of Shawnee, Delaware and Miami people, with British and French-Canadian traders living among them, that had grown to roughly two thousand residents by 1792. That October it hosted a council chiefs of dozens of nations attended, one of the largest Indian gatherings on record for the era. General Anthony Wayne's army ended it in August 1794, finding the villages abandoned, burning their cornfields and cabins, and building a stockade strong enough, Wayne wrote, "to defy the English, Indians, and all the devils of hell to take it" -- or so one telling of the fort's naming goes; a second version credits the line to Kentucky militia officer Charles Scott instead. The fort held through the War of 1812 as Fort Winchester before it was abandoned for good, and in 1822 a town was laid out on the same ground. It became Defiance County's seat in 1845 and a city in 1881, and Pontiac Park, at the exact point where the old villages stood, now carries a local tradition -- unverified but long repeated -- that the Ottawa leader Pontiac himself was born there.

Eight months with Cooh-coo-che

In July 1792, eleven-year-old O. M. Spencer was seized a short walk from his family's Cincinnati home and marched six days north to the Glaize. His Shawnee captor handed him off to a Mohawk man named White Loon, who left the boy in a small bark cabin on the Maumee's north bank, directly across the water from the point where Fort Defiance would rise two years later. The cabin belonged to White Loon's mother-in-law, an Iroquois widow named Cooh-coo-che -- described in the county's 1883 history as a princess of her people and a medicine woman whom warriors consulted before going to war. Her own husband, a Mohawk war chief who had left the St. Lawrence after his people's defeat in the Revolution, had been killed in 1790 fighting Josiah Harmar's army; she later moved his remains to a grave near the war path and buried him sitting upright, facing west, with his weapons and moccasins beside him. Spencer spent eight months in her household, across corn fields that by his account stretched more than a mile up the Auglaize, before an American prisoner at large helped arrange his release -- leaving behind one of the few detailed accounts of daily life at the Glaize in the years just before Wayne's army destroyed it.

88% of these days are measurements from a gauge inside Defiance; the rest are estimated from the nearest gauges around it.

48,879 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
