How Newport Township, Washington County began

Newport Township lies along the Ohio River in southeastern Washington County. Massachusetts settlers reached the site of Newport as early as 1798, though the town was not formally platted until 1839, and by 1833 the settlement already supported a meeting house, several brick schoolhouses, two dry goods stores and a flour mill. Colonel Joseph Barker built his son Judge Joseph Barker Jr. a brick house on the river bluff in 1832, and the township's Hildreth Covered Bridge, built in the 1870s over the Little Muskingum River, is one of the tallest covered bridges in the region. The 2020 census recorded 1,901 residents.

Settled 1798, platted 1839, by settlers from Massachusetts.

Stories

A father's craft, built for a son on the bluff

Colonel Joseph Barker of Muskingum Township, the shipbuilder and architect who had already raised his own brick house on the river in 1811, went on to design many of the finest early buildings in Washington County -- most of which no longer stand. One that survives is the 1832 house he built for his son, Judge Joseph Barker Jr., on a bluff above the Ohio River near Newport. The younger Barker went on to serve in the Ohio General Assembly in the early 1830s and later sat on the Washington County court of common pleas until his death; his father's house passed eventually to the Army Corps of Engineers, which converted it to a government office by the late 1970s -- a practical modern use for a building whose real value lies in being one of the last physical traces of the elder Barker's work.

The tallest crossing on the Little Muskingum

Sometime between 1871 and 1881, with the bulk of the work dated to 1878, an unrecorded builder raised the Hildreth Covered Bridge over the Little Muskingum River east of Marietta, using a Howe truss set on cut stone piers. What distinguishes the bridge from the county's many other covered crossings is its height: it stands unusually far above the water below, a striking sight for a wooden bridge of its era. Roofed in metal and sided with vertical boards over battened portals, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 as much for its engineering as for its local history.
