How Mount Orab began

Mount Orab was laid out by Daniel Keether on September 3, 1850, with only 19 original lots, and grew slowly until the Cincinnati & Eastern Railroad reached it on April 19, 1877. Wikipedia says the name most likely derives from the biblical Mount Horeb, while the 1883 county history says Keether took it from Oreb in the Book of Judges. The village's former railroad depot, moved to a new site in 1975, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Platted 1850-09-03, by Daniel Keether.

Where the name comes from

Wikipedia says the name most likely derives from Mount Horeb of the Hebrew Bible. The 1883 county history, which spells the village Mt. Oreb, says its founder Daniel Keethler took the name from the Bible, from Oreb, the Midianite chieftain slain on the rock Oreb in Judges 7, and held that the common spelling Orab had no authority.

Before the town

No Native American village, mound or trail specific to Mount Orab is recorded here. The site lies within the 1795 Treaty of Greenville cession and the Virginia Military District.

Stories

From nineteen lots to a rail town

Daniel Keether platted Mount Orab with just nineteen lots on September 3, 1850, and the 1883 county history says the growth of the village was at first slow, with few improvements until the Cincinnati & Eastern Railroad was completed. The railroad reached Mt. Oreb on April 19, 1877; the same history says land that had sold for $30 an acre four years earlier could no longer be bought for $125. The village's railroad station was moved to a new site in 1975 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Twenty-eight in one night

The Christian Union Church of Mt. Oreb was organized in 1867 by Rev. W. H. Robinson, a revivalist who brought 159 people into the church over the winter of 1867-68. The township historian, who was present one night, recalled seventeen persons joining and the benediction being pronounced, when one of the converts remarked to Robinson that had he held on a little longer, his father and mother would have joined. Robinson recalled the congregation and renewed the invitation, and eleven more came forward, twenty-eight in all that night. He stayed as pastor for several years, and the historian noted dryly that while Robinson was a successful revivalist, he lacked the modern power of converting the pocketbook, and had to find other means to support his family. Membership stood at 74 in 1870 and 130 three years later.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
