How Maple Heights began

Maple Heights was carved from the northwestern part of Bedford Township, established in 1823 and named at settler Daniel Benedict's suggestion for his birthplace, Bedford, Connecticut; Benjamin Fitch, who arrived in 1813, was the area's first known white settler, and John Dunham, who settled in the same northwestern section, built the road still known as Dunham Road. When annexation to Bedford Village seemed imminent in 1914, residents of the 'Maple Grove' area voted to form their own community instead, incorporating as the village of Maple Heights -- named for its many maple trees -- in July 1915 with a population of 1,000. Czech, Slovenian and Lithuanian immigrant families settled the growing suburb after 1900, and it became a city on January 1, 1932; growth accelerated with railroads (1849, 1881) and an interurban line (1895-1932), and it became a regional retail destination when Southgate USA, one of the first large shopping centers in the Cleveland area, opened in 1955 with more than 80 stores. Maple Heights fell into state-declared fiscal emergency in February 2015 amid a deficit exceeding $2.8 million, recovering and exiting emergency status in November 2020; the city of about 23,700 has since drawn new investment, including a 2020 announcement that GOJO Industries, maker of Purell, would open a facility creating about 100 jobs.

Settled 1813 (Benjamin Fitch), incorporated 1915-07 (village); 1932-01-01 (city), by Benjamin Fitch; residents of the Maple Grove section of Bedford Township.

Where the name comes from

Maple Heights was named for its many maple trees. The community's territory was originally the northwestern part of Bedford Township, itself named in 1823 at the suggestion of settler Daniel Benedict for his birthplace, Bedford, Connecticut.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Maple Heights. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

  2. — Samuel Barnes, of Vermont, settles in the northwest part of Bedford Township (the future Maple Heights area) after coming from Newburg, where he had lived since 1817.

  7. — The Akron, Bedford & Cleveland interurban line is completed through the area; it operates until 1932.
  8. — Czech (Bohemian), Slovenian and Lithuanian immigrant families begin settling the area, including Czech families Uhlik, Hodous and Tresnicka, and Slovenian settlers Martin Potisek (1906) and John Rybak (1909).
  9. — Residents of the Maple Grove section of Bedford Township, facing likely annexation to Bedford Village, vote instead to form their own community.
  10. — Maple Heights incorporates as a village with a population of 1,000, the first political change in Bedford Township since 1837.

Stories

Maple Grove chooses itself over Bedford

For nearly a century after Bedford Township organized in 1823, the farms of its northwestern corner -- settled first by Benjamin Fitch in 1813 and then by families like the Barneses and Dunhams -- had no separate identity at all, just scattered lots within a township named for a Connecticut town its residents had never seen. That changed in 1914, when annexation to the growing Bedford Village looked all but certain: rather than be absorbed, residents of what they called the Maple Grove section voted to incorporate on their own instead. The village of Maple Heights -- named simply for its many maple trees -- was born the following July with a population of just 1,000, the first political break in Bedford Township in nearly a century. Immigrant families arriving in the same years, Czech, Slovenian and Lithuanian alike, built much of the community that followed, and by 1932 it had grown enough to become a city in its own right.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
