How Madison began

Madison village grew at the crossroads first known as Centreville (Centerville), south of the township's earlier settlements on the ridges, in a territory that before 1811 was called Chapintown. When Lake County was formed in 1840 the township's seat of government moved to the village, and one hundred fourteen electors petitioned to incorporate the Village of Madison on November 9, 1867; the first village election followed on March 12, 1868. By 1878 it held a foundry, a veneering mill, a cheese-vat factory, a bank and a union school, and it shipped potatoes by the carload from the Lake Shore railroad; Howe's history later recorded it as an Underground Railroad station on the old Cleveland-to-Buffalo stage road. Twenty-seven of its houses and buildings, most on Main, River and Lake streets, were added to the National Register of Historic Places on one day in 1980.

Settled 1802 (Madison Township's first settlement, by John A. Harper); the village site was known as Centreville by 1830, incorporated 1867 (petitioned November 9; granted December 4; first election March 12, 1868).

Where the name comes from

The village takes the name of Madison Township, organized by Geauga County commissioners on March 13, 1811, which the 1878 county history says was called Chapintown before that date. The village itself was called Centreville (also spelled Centerville) as late as 1830 before taking the township's name. The township's name is most likely from President James Madison or from Madison, Connecticut, home to some settlers, according to a 1935 local sketch; neither history states the choice outright.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail or site inside present Madison village is recorded in the 1878 county history, Howe's Historical Collections, or the other sources consulted. The nearest recorded earthwork is Madison Fort, on a ridge above the Grand River in Madison Township, outside the village (listed on the National Register). The land passed to the Connecticut Land Company under the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — Geauga County commissioners formally organize Madison Township on March 13, combining parts of two surveyed townships; the first township election that year draws 15 ballots.
  2. — Before the March 13 order the new township's territory was called Chapintown; its first election, that April, is held at Phineas Mixer's house, with Abraham Tappan as chairman and John A. Harper as the first justice of the peace.
  3. — Blacksmith John Kellogg arrives in Madison on foot on August 30 after a journey of nearly a thousand miles; he later buys land in the village, and his house and barn at 30 E. Main Street are now on the National Register.
  4. — The Arcole iron furnace, drawing on bog-iron deposits along the North Ridge, grows, by the account of a 1935 local sketch that we could not confirm elsewhere, into the largest manufacturing enterprise in Ohio, employing about 2,000 people and building more than 200 houses for workers before a second furnace is added in 1831.
  5. — Twenty-four members leave the Congregational church on the middle ridge to form the Second Congregational Church of Madison in the village, then called Centreville.
  6. — Centerville (the future Madison village) has three stores, two churches and about eighty houses; nearby Unionville has four stores, two churches and about a hundred houses.
  7. — With the formation of Lake County the township is enlarged and its seat of government moves from the middle ridge to Madison village, where the town hall built about 1828 as a union meeting-house stands.
  8. — A. A. Genung starts a foundry casting sad-irons, first run by horse-power; his brother William H. Genung takes it over in 1851 and adds a machine shop.
  9. — H. A. Roe begins making cheese vats for farm dairies just below Main Street; the Cheese-vat Factory at 16 Eagle Street is now on the National Register.
  10. — Fire destroys the Genung foundry in April; William H. Genung rebuilds it the same summer and runs the first heat that October.
  11. — Elisha Wood, Cook and Howard build the village's first brick business block.
  12. — John Williams builds a large brick storage and shipping house on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway just north of the village, chiefly for shipping potatoes.
  13. — Madison village is organized as a special school district; its school building goes up in the summer of 1867 and graduates its first class in June 1875.
  14. — Marble tablets naming the Madison men who died in the Civil War are set across the rear of the town hall when it is remodeled.
  15. — One hundred fourteen electors petition the county commissioners on November 9 to incorporate the Village of Madison; the petition is granted December 4.

  20. — A monument in Madison's park is dedicated to the soldiers and sailors of the Civil War on July 5.
  21. — The Madison Basketcraft company, incorporated in 1908, reorganizes in 1928 as the Madison Willow Craft, a $50,000 corporation shipping art-craft baskets to every state.

Stories

Ohio's largest ironworks, on a bog nobody remembers

In the 1820s, deposits of bog iron along the wetlands of Madison Township's North Ridge fed an industry almost nothing today would suggest was ever there. The Erie Furnace Company, and its successor the Arcole Furnace, turned that ore into pig iron, plowshares and the era's new Buckeye stoves, which sold as far away as Detroit and Canada -- and by 1831, with demand outrunning a single furnace, the company built a second one and became, by a local historian's own account, the largest manufacturing enterprise in the entire state of Ohio. Two hundred molders cast the iron, a hundred fifty more washed ore in wooden troughs, and another two hundred cut wood and burned charcoal to keep the furnaces fed; more than two hundred houses and several large boarding houses went up to hold the 2,000 people the company employed, along with a three-story hotel that filled with lake sailors when boats put in at the nearby dock. The company even ran its own store, doing $150,000 a year in trade and paying workers in due bills because the nearest actual bank was fifty miles away in Warren. None of it lasted: like so much of the Western Reserve's first industrial wave, the furnace boom burned through the local timber and ore faster than either could be replenished, and by the time Madison incorporated as a village in 1867 the iron town at Arcole was already fading into local memory rather than local landscape.

The Underground Railroad stop on the stage road

Madison sat on the old stage route from Cleveland to Buffalo, and Henry Howe's Historical Collections of Ohio records the village as a station on the Underground Railroad. Howe adds a claim tied to Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel: that the man taken as the original of George Harris in Uncle Tom's Cabin was arrested at Madison and then rescued at Unionville, the older tavern village on the ridge to the east. Howe gives no date or names for the arrest, and the 1878 county history, which lists the village's churches, physicians and merchants in detail, does not mention it. What the two books do agree on is the setting: a lakeshore crossroads where travelers and freight passed through between Cleveland and Buffalo.

A foundry that burned and ran again by fall

A. A. Genung opened a small foundry in Madison village in 1842, casting sad-irons and other small articles with horse-power; steam came later as the trade grew. His brother William H. Genung took it over in 1851 and added a machine shop. In April 1858 the foundry burned, leaving him, as the 1878 county history puts it, penniless and about six hundred dollars in debt. He rebuilt that summer and ran the first heat that October. By 1876 he had added a brick machine shop on the north side of the foundry, fitted with lathes and planers, and was making engines, mill-work and screws for cider mills and presses, with about ten thousand dollars invested. The same year the foundry burned, H. A. Roe started the cheese-vat works a little below Main Street, whose building still stands on Eagle Street.
