How Hubbard began
Hubbard was named for Nehemiah Hubbard Jr., a Connecticut Land Company agent, and first settled in 1801 by Samuel Tylee and his family, also from Connecticut, at a crossroads that took the name Tylee's Corners after Samuel's brother Sylvester settled its northeast corner in 1802. The town stayed a small farming settlement -- a post office opened by 1812, and a post office is separately dated to 1826 by Wikipedia -- until 1861, when the discovery and development of local coal and iron deposits rapidly built up the town over the following decade; it incorporated as a village in 1868 under its first mayor, Nathaniel Mitchell, the same year the first of two Andrews & Hitchcock blast furnaces went up. By 1882 Hubbard had two blast furnaces, a rolling mill employing about 200 men, a National Bank, seven churches and its own newspaper. Hubbard grew into a Mahoning Valley industrial suburb through the twentieth century, peaking near 9,245 residents in 1980, and today sits on Trumbull County's southeastern border as part of the Youngstown-Warren metropolitan area.
Settled 1801-09-01, by Samuel Tylee and family, incorporated 1868, as a village, under first mayor Nathaniel Mitchell, by Samuel Tylee (settler, 1801); Sylvester Tylee (settled the crossroads known as Tylee's Corners, 1802); incorporated 1868.
Where the name comes from
Hubbard takes its name from Nehemiah Hubbard Jr., an original member of the Connecticut Land Company who owned the township and sold its land to settlers through his agent, Samuel Tylee; the settlement itself was founded not by Hubbard but by Tylee and his family in 1801. Before it grew into a town the crossroads was known locally as Tylee's Corners, after Sylvester Tylee, Samuel's brother, who settled its northeast corner lot in 1802.
Before the town
No Native village, camp or treaty event specific to the Hubbard town site is recorded in the sources we reviewed. The site lies within the Mahoning valley the county's 1882 history describes as Delaware-occupied hunting ground used seasonally by Seneca and Mingo bands through the 1700s, but no source found names a town or camp at this specific location, near the Pennsylvania line at the county's southeastern corner.
Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Seneca, Mingo (Seneca-Cayuga).
Timeline
- — Samuel Tylee and his family, from Middletown, Connecticut, arrive as the settlement's first residents, Tylee choosing a cabin site northwest of the later village corners.
- — Sylvester Tylee settles the northeast corner lot at the crossroads, which becomes known as Tylee's Corners.
- — Sylvester Tylee becomes the settlement's first postmaster, also keeping tavern and a small grocery.
- — Samuel Tylee opens the first store at Tylee's Corners, in his own house.
- — A post office is established at Hubbard, per Wikipedia (the 1882 county history dates a Tylee's Corners post office earlier, before 1812).
- — Coal-field development begins in earnest; within a decade the crossroads grows from a handful of houses to nearly 2,000 residents.
- — Hubbard incorporates as a village under its first mayor, Nathaniel Mitchell; the same year Andrews & Hitchcock erect Hubbard furnace number one, the town's first blast furnace.
- — Andrews & Hitchcock build a second blast furnace, and the Hubbard Rolling-Mill Company builds a rolling mill with twelve puddling furnaces, employing about 200 men.
- — The Hubbard Savings Bank organizes, becoming a National Bank with $50,000 capital by 1875.
- — George M. McKelvey & Co. opens the village's largest mercantile store, backed partly by the furnace and coal companies for supplying their workmen.
- — The county history counts twelve stores, one hotel, seven churches, a National bank, three physicians, two lawyers, a newspaper, a gristmill, a rolling mill and two blast furnaces in the village.
- — Hubbard's population peaks at 9,245 residents.
- — The census records 7,636 residents, continuing a decline from 7,874 in 2010.
Stories
A decade that remade a farm town
For sixty years after Samuel Tylee's family settled there in 1801, Hubbard was an unremarkable Trumbull County crossroads known locally as Tylee's Corners, 'too young to have much history,' in the words of the 1882 county history, and still just a scatter of houses as late as 1861. Then coal development began in earnest, and within ten years the crossroads held nearly two thousand people, its Main Street lined for a mile and a half with houses and stores built in such haste that many, twenty years on, 'still stand unimproved in appearance.' By 1868 the boom was substantial enough to incorporate as a village and to justify the first of two Andrews & Hitchcock blast furnaces; four years later a rolling mill with twelve puddling furnaces went up beside it, eventually employing about two hundred men making merchant guide iron. A town founded by Connecticut farmers ended the century known instead for coal and iron.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
