How Hamler began
Hamler was platted in July 1874 by William D. Hill and his wife Augusta B. Hill where the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad crosses the Turkey Foot road in Marion Township, and named for John Hamler, the township's first settler, who had arrived in 1846 when the area was still dense, undrained forest. The railroad's arrival five years earlier had finally broken decades of stalled settlement caused by absentee land speculation and a fraudulent 1850s plank-road bond scheme; by the late 1880s Hamler supported a graded school, Catholic and Methodist Episcopal churches, a stave factory and a lodge of the Odd Fellows.
Platted July 10, 1874, recorded December 23, 1875, by William D. Hill and Augusta B. Hill, by William D. Hill and Augusta B. Hill, with additions by J. W. Sargent.
Where the name comes from
The village was named in honor of John Hamler, the first settler of Marion Township, who had entered land in section twenty-one in September 1846, nearly three decades before the village itself was platted.
Before the town
No Native village, mound or treaty site specific to the Hamler town site is documented. John Hamler, the township's first settler and the village's namesake, recalled on arriving in 1846 that 'the Indians, a remnant of the Ottowas, were only twenty-six miles east' of his new homestead -- placing the nearest Native community he knew of well outside the township, likely referring to the last Ottawa families near the Maumee River, rather than describing any site at Hamler itself.
Nations recorded here: Ottawa.

Stories
A village named for the man who came first
When John Hamler entered land in Marion Township in September 1846, he was, by his own account preserved in the 1888 county history, twenty miles from the nearest trading point and thirty from the nearest mill, with wild beasts and mosquitoes his only company and the last Ottawa families some twenty-six miles to the east. Yet Hamler told the historian his life in the woods 'was not devoid of enjoyment,' and that he took nearly as much pleasure in it as he did decades later 'surrounded by all the comforts and luxuries of civilization.' Almost thirty years after his arrival, once the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had finally opened the township to real settlement, William D. Hill platted a new village at the rail crossing and named it for the pioneer who had broken the ground first -- a village that by the time of Hamler's own old age supported a brick graded school, two churches, three dry goods stores and a lodge of the Odd Fellows on land he had once cleared alone.
From 195 people to a railroad village
When Marion Township was counted in 1860 it held only 195 people, scattered through woods the county history called the Big Woods. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, built through in 1869, drained the land, brought saw-mills and stave factories, and forced absentee speculators to sell. By 1870 the township had 513 people and by 1880, 1,202. William D. Hill and his wife Augusta platted Hamler at the crossing in 1874; its first census in 1880 counted 231 residents and the next, in 1890, 556. The 1888 history credited the growth to immigration, mostly Irish and German, mixed with a few Yankees drawn by the timber, and listed a graded school, Catholic and Methodist churches, an Odd Fellows lodge and a Grand Army post in the village by then.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
