How Broughton began
Broughton is a small village in the southwest of Jackson Township, Paulding County, on the NKP (Nickel Plate) railroad. Its post office ran from 1882 to 1927, and the village reached 226 residents in 1900, in the county's timber-and-stave boom, falling to 111 in 1920, recovering to 171 by 1980 and counting 116 in 2020. Its best-documented building is the 1904 town hall, which still stands at the south end of the village. Henry Howe's 1888 account records three families in the surrounding township in 1837.

Stories
The Garden Spot Empties
In 1900 Broughton was one of eleven Paulding County places in the village census table, with 226 people, larger only than Haviland (186). The county's boosters of that decade called their land a 'garden spot,' and the Paulding County Progress's 2016 Visions timeline describes the economy under them: sawmills, hoop and stave factories and other timber industries that employed many men until the Black Swamp forest ran out. By 1913 photographs of the Auglaize River showed barely a tree on its banks, and the 1910 census found Paulding County 17.4 percent smaller than in 1900, the biggest drop in Ohio. Broughton shrank with it, to 195 in 1910 and 111 in 1920. The Visions editors also note that autos and rural free delivery stripped small railroad towns of their old role, and Broughton's own post office closed in 1927. The 1904 town hall, built at the height of the boom, is the building that outlasted it.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Broughton, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
47,155 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
