How Brewster began

Brewster was founded as a railroad town by the Barry-Pontius Company, a Canton real-estate firm of James D. Barry and Jackson W. Pontius, for the shops and yards of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, which began producing locomotives there in 1910; a post office called Brewster opened the same year. The railroad built and erected fifty of its own steam engines at the Brewster shops, and its Brewster Railroad YMCA of 1916, at 45 South Wabash Avenue, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Brewster counted 928 residents in 1920, 1,464 in 1930, 2,025 in 1960 and 2,113 in 2020, and the shops still do contract repair of locomotives and freight cars.

Settled 1910, by Barry-Pontius Company for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway.

Where the name comes from

The sources do not say for whom or what Brewster was named. Lehman's 1916 county history says the Barry-Pontius Company founded the railroad town.

Before the town

Stories

A railroad that built its own locomotives

The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway began producing locomotives at its Brewster shops in 1910. According to Wikipedia, over the years the railroad built and rolled boilers and erected fifty of its own steam engines there, a feat never tried by many larger and more famous railroads. Brewster is the location of the corporate headquarters and shops of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway, and the shops continue to perform contract repairs, upgrades and fabrication of locomotives and freight cars. The Brewster Railroad YMCA, built in 1916 by the railroad, has a National Register of Historic Places record.

A town platted by a real-estate firm

Brewster was not settled by farmers drifting into a clearing; it was laid out as a railroad town. Lehman's 1916 history of Stark County, in a biography of Canton real-estate man James D. Barry, says that his firm, the Barry-Pontius Company, founded the railroad town of Brewster, where the shops and yards of the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway are located, and platted additions to New Berlin, Louisville and Canton. Barry had been secretary of the Canton City Water Works board from 1899 to 1903, then went into real estate and insurance and joined the late Jackson W. Pontius, who died in 1909 and whose name stayed on the firm.

48,608 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
