How Bloom Township, Wood County began
Bloom Township was organized March 2, 1835, one of the last parts of Wood County to draw settlers, and named by three settlers who sent their preferences on slips of paper to Perrysburg, after Henry Copus and James Archer bought the earliest land there in 1831 and the Leathers and Hay families became its first residents in 1833. It holds the villages of Bairdstown and Cygnet along with Bloomdale and part of Jerry City. In July 1875 it was the site of one of the county's earliest, and least successful, oil prospecting attempts, when farmers found crude petroleum floating on a spring in the township's northwestern sections and tried, unsuccessfully, to bore down to its source a full decade before the real Wood County oil boom began.
Settled 1833, by Jacob and John Leathers and Jonathan Hay, incorporated township established March 2, 1835, from Congressional Township 3, Range 11, by Wood County commissioners.
Where the name comes from
The county's own 1897 history records the naming directly: in spring 1835 a committee of three settlers -- Daniel Robbins, Jonathan Hay and Samuel Heller -- could not agree on a name, so each wrote a preference on a slip of paper (Heller proposed Green, Hay proposed Amanda, Robbins proposed Bloom) and carried the slips to Perrysburg for the county to decide. Hay made the round trip on foot; when he returned, he announced to Robbins and Heller, 'The child is born, and its name is Bloom!' -- and the name has held ever since.
Before the town
The county's 1897 history records no mound, earthwork or named village in Bloom Township, but it does record Native people using it: the first settlers found a shanty built by Indians, which Jacob Leathers and his brother occupied for several days in April 1833, and in 1833 some fifty Native travellers who had lost the trail between Upper Sandusky and the Maumee asked Leathers to help them find it again. Wood County was part of the Ottawa hunting ground until the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids.

Timeline
- — Henry Copus and James Archer buy the first lands purchased in what becomes Bloom Township, while it is still part of the Indian hunting ground.
- — Jacob Leathers is asked to guide a party of some fifty Native travellers who had lost the trail between Upper Sandusky and the Maumee; he finds the path and they thank him and move on.
- — Jacob Leathers and his wife, with his brother John Leathers and family, become the first white settlers to actually live in the township, unloading their goods on Section 33 under an oak tree; Jonathan Hay arrives six days later.

Stories
The twelve days of the lost Frankfather child
On October 25, 1835, Frederick Frankfather and the older members of his family walked to a neighbor's house to hear preaching, leaving the younger children gathering hickory nuts near the cabin. Four-and-a-half-year-old Mary wandered off and was not missed until evening. A search began at once and grew for days: by the eighth day, 500 to 600 searchers -- many who had come from Van Buren -- were combing the woods in organized lines, camping six miles north of Bloom's center. On the eleventh day, searchers learned that a man named Clark had found a child in the woods near Milton Center; thinking she was a 'little Indian,' he and his companions gave her cake and told her to go to camp, but she instead followed a trail to a settler's cabin. Her father and two other men reached her that evening and brought her home the next morning, the twelfth day of her disappearance. The family dog, which had stayed with her the whole time, was believed killed by wolves on the tenth night. Mary survived, married, and moved to Sandusky County and later Texas, where she died in 1861.
The lost trail between Upper Sandusky and the Maumee
Soon after Jacob Leathers and his brother settled on Section 33 in April 1833, a number of Indians came to Leathers one day and asked him to go with them into the woods. They were used to passing through this country between Upper Sandusky and the Maumee River and had lost their trail, but they would not tell him what they wanted. Mrs. Leathers was uneasy, though she said nothing against his going. When the path was found a loud whoop went up and answered by a general yell; some fifty or more were gathered in a group. They thanked Leathers and went on their way. The account is the 1897 county history's, taken from the township's early settlers.
