How North Baltimore began
North Baltimore was platted in 1874 when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad extended a line through southern Wood County, and incorporated as a village in 1876. A decade later it became the center of one of Ohio's richest natural gas and oil fields: drillers found gas and oil across a swath of country from Bairdstown to Hoytville beginning in 1886, and the village's own post office at nearby Oil Center recorded the boom's name directly on the map. The oil years left the village its Town Hall, and a century later an industrial chemical release put the town briefly in the national news.
Platted 1874, with the extension of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, incorporated village, 1876, by Baltimore and Ohio Railroad-era platters.
Where the name comes from
North Baltimore's exact naming rationale was not stated in the sources consulted, beyond that the village is not adjacent to and has no direct connection with Baltimore, Ohio, a separate community roughly 140 miles away; the 'North' distinguishes it from that older namesake.
Before the town
No mound, earthwork or named Native village specific to North Baltimore was found in any source consulted; the county's own 1897 history states that no such evidence exists anywhere in Wood County.

Stories
The well that roared for five miles
On July 30, 1886, drillers working the Simon farm four miles northeast of North Baltimore, for the Parmer Oil Company, struck a strong flow of gas twenty feet into the Trenton rock at 1,010 feet. They kept drilling, and when the gas was finally fired it threw a flame seventy-five feet above the well's mouth, its roar audible five miles away. State geologist Edward Orton came out to measure it on August 6, 1886, and put its output at 12,451,968 cubic feet a day -- more than any other well yet found in the field, and by the county historian's arithmetic equal to burning 275 tons of coal every day for nothing. The North Baltimore field, running from Bairdstown to Hoytville, was one of several boom pockets that made Wood County briefly one of the richest natural-gas producing districts in the country; the village's post office at nearby Oil Center still carries the boom's name on old maps.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside North Baltimore, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.
48,704 days of records, 1893-02-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
