Deep dives about Berkey

Long reads built from maps, newspapers and public records. All deep dives

How Berkey began

Berkey, in the northwest corner of Richfield Township, grew from a settlement at Berkey's Corners on the old Territorial Road, where Philip Wolfinger built the township's first log house in 1834 and Lucian B. Lathrop's family soon followed. The post office, named Riga, opened in 1835 (Wikipedia says 1837) with Lathrop as postmaster; the 1888 county history says the office took the name Berkey in 1865 for the postmaster Richard K. Berkeybile (Wikipedia dates the change to 1870). The first school in the township was built near the corners in 1837. Berkey was incorporated as a village in 1915 and counted 275 people in 2020.

Settled 1834 (Philip Wolfinger and Lucian B. Lathrop, first log houses in Richfield Township), incorporated 1915.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was first Riga, after its post office; Waggoner's 1888 history says the office name was changed to Berkey in 1865, for its postmaster Richard K. Berkeybile, and Wikipedia dates the change to 1870.

Stories

A school, a road and a post office at Berkey's Corners

The township's first public road was the Old Territorial Road from Toledo to Angola, Indiana, opened through the wilderness in the winter of 1834-35; for many years the only other roads were Indian trails and cow paths. Near the corner where the Territorial Road crossed another route, Col. Lucian B. Lathrop became postmaster in 1835 of the Riga post office, which got a weekly mail and kept him in the job for fifteen years. In 1837 the settlers built the township's first school, a rough log house on the road, and Francis Smith taught the first winter for forty dollars for two months, boarding himself. Pliny Lathrop succeeded his brother as postmaster for eight years, then a nephew, Clark C. Lathrop, in 1858. In 1865 the office took its new name, Berkey, from Richard K. Berkeybile, who had succeeded Charles Ford as postmaster. The 1888 county history notes that Richfield had never had an establishment open for the sale of intoxicating liquors.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Berkey, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,916 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
