How Avon Lake began

Avon Lake is the lakefront part of old Avon Township, between Lorain and Bay Village. Noah Davis built a cabin on the lake shore road around 1812 and left within a year; Adam Miller and Gaston Young took up the lake shore afterward, and Wikipedia dates the Miller family to 1819. The lake side of the township was set off in 1915 as Avon Lake and became a city in 1960. Its population grew from 904 in 1920 to 25,206 in 2020, and industry on the lakefront (a power plant and chemical works) sits beside suburban neighborhoods.

Where the name comes from

Avon Lake takes its name from Avon Township, which was called Troy from 1818 until December 1824, when the Lorain County commissioners renamed it Avon on a petition of forty citizens (Boynton's 1876 address and the 1916 county history; the 1879 county history misprints 1834). 'Lake' was added when the lake-shore part of the township was set off in 1915. Why the township was called Avon is not stated in the sources consulted.

Before the town

No Native village or mound is recorded within Avon Lake itself. The 1916 county history says that in 1809 the Cleveland-to-west mail was carried on foot along an Indian trail on the sand beaches of the lake shore, the route the first settlers' road followed. Wikipedia repeats a local account that the Erie lived on this shore until the 1650s and that the Lenape (Delaware) and Wyandot moved in by about 1700; whether the Erie lived this far west is doubtful. The Moravian Christian Delawares under David Zeisberger camped for three days in April 1787 at the mouth of the Black River at present-day Lorain, to the west, before a Delaware captain ordered them on to Sandusky.

Stories

A road on the sand

Before there was a settlement, there was a path. The 1916 county history says that in 1809 the mail between Cleveland and the west was carried by Benoni Adams of Columbia, on foot, over what was only an Indian trail along the sand beaches. A road had been laid out along the shore as early as 1807, and where Avon Lake's lakeside homes now stand it passed close to the bank. Noah Davis, the first settler here, built beside it around 1812 and left within a year. His cabin outlasted him: Gaston Young moved into the Davis cabin when he came, while Adam Miller took up land on section six, and Miller's family is the one Avon Lake counts as its first permanent settlers in 1819, a date we found only in Wikipedia.

The Moravians who stopped at Lorain

Avon Lake's Wikipedia article says Moravian missionaries founded the first European settlement here in 1786, but the county histories place the Moravians farther west and a year later. In April 1787 Christian Delawares led by David Zeisberger, driven from the Cuyahoga, travelled along the lake and on 24 April reached a creek at the mouth of the Black River, where crab apple and plum trees stood among wild potatoes. Three days later a Delaware captain, bringing orders from the chiefs, told them to move on to Sandusky. They went on to the Huron River and built New Salem near present Milan. The county history counts the camp as the second temporary settlement in what is now Lorain County, but it was at Lorain, not Avon Lake.
