Life story

Maya Lin was born in Athens in 1959 to Chinese immigrants who both taught at Ohio University: her father, ceramist Henry Huan Lin, was dean of the College of Fine Arts and her mother, Julia Chang Lin, a poet and literature professor. As a high-school student she took Ohio University courses, casting bronze in its foundry and learning computer programming, and she graduated from Athens High School in The Plains in 1977. In 1981, still an undergraduate at Yale, she won the national competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, beating 1,421 other entries, and went on to design the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, and many landscape works. She credits the Hopewell and Adena mounds near her childhood home for her interest in earthworks, and has made three permanent works in Ohio: Groundswell at the Wexner Center in Columbus (1993), the Reading a Garden fountain at Cleveland Public Library (1998) and Input, a punch-card earthwork at Ohio University (2004). She received the National Medal of Arts in 2009 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Stories

Ohio mounds and Japanese gardens

Lin grew up in rural southeastern Ohio near Hopewell and Adena burial mounds, and has said they shaped her sense that even the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is an earthwork. At the Wexner Center in 1992-1993 she filled three leftover concrete spaces in Peter Eisenman's building with rolling drifts of shattered tempered glass. She described Groundswell as mixing 'my affinity for the southeastern Ohio terrain and its regional burial mounds with my love for the raked-sand gardens of Japan.' The glass was recycled: clear from old glass doors and green from car windows, blended to look like water.

The sculpture students fall into

Input, Lin's 2004 gift to Ohio University's bicentennial, is a field of 21 grassy rectangles, some raised and some sunk, that from above reads as a computer punch card, a nod to the programming classes she took at the university as a high-school student. Her brother Tan Lin wrote the words set into it, many about growing up in Athens with professor parents. In 2005 the student paper found that many students had no idea what it was; one freshman learned when he fell into it at night. The paper put its cost at about $750,000, $300,000 of it from Ohio's Percent for Art program.

A poem in the library garden

When Cleveland Public Library rebuilt the Eastman Reading Garden between its two Superior Avenue buildings after adding the Louis Stokes Wing, Lin designed its centrepiece, Reading a Garden. It is an L-shaped black granite fountain with a gently flowing pool, set in granite paving blocks carved with an abstract language poem by Tan Lin. The Lins also chose the puzzle of words and word-parts that forms the grille of Tom Otterness's bronze garden gates. The garden was dedicated on 18 September 1998.
