New Burlington: the Ohio village the government bought and tore down

New Burlington, Clinton County, Ohio (settled 1799, laid out 1833; local tradition makes it an Underground Railroad stop) was bought whole by the federal government for Caesar Creek Lake. The 1974 impact statement counts 215 family homesites, two churches and eight businesses, including the entire town. The deadline to leave was Feb. 29, 1972; by late 1973 only sidewalks and foundations were left. The dam was dedicated July 29, 1978, and its spillway is now a fossil-hunting site.
