How Westlake began

Joseph Cahoon, who had migrated with his family from Vergennes, Vermont, located on the east side of Cahoon Creek on the morning of October 10, 1810 -- the first white settler of what was then Dover Township, on Lake Erie's south shore west of Cleveland; that same evening Asahel Porter's family arrived as well. The township split repeatedly as it grew -- its northern strip broke off as Bay Village in 1901 and part of its southern territory joined North Olmsted in 1912 -- before the remaining residents incorporated as Dover Village in 1911 or 1913 (sources disagree); to avoid confusion with Dover in Tuscarawas County, the village was renamed Westlake in 1940 and became a city in 1957. A grape-growing region into the late 19th century and rural through the first half of the 20th, Westlake grew rapidly as a Cleveland suburb after completion of Interstate 90 and is now home to Crocker Park, the Clague House museum, and the headquarters of several major employers, with a 2020 population of about 34,000.

Settled 1810-10-10 (Joseph Cahoon), incorporated 1911 (Dover Village, per the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History) or 1913 (per Wikipedia), sources disagree; 1940 (renamed Westlake); 1957 (city), by Joseph Cahoon and Asahel Porter.

Where the name comes from

The community was originally Dover Township, then incorporated as Dover Village, both named for Dover, England (a common Connecticut Western Reserve naming pattern). Persistent mail and record mix-ups with Dover in Tuscarawas County led the village to rename itself Westlake in 1940, describing its position on Lake Erie's western shore relative to Cleveland.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Westlake. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Timeline

  1. — Joseph Cahoon, with his wife and seven children, arrives from Vergennes, Vermont by wagon and settles on lot eighty-five at the mouth of Cahoon Creek, completing a log house within four days; the same evening, Asahel Porter's family and his 17-year-old nephew Leverett Johnson also arrive in Dover Township.
  2. — Joseph Cahoon raises the frame of the first grist-mill west of the Cuyahoga River, on Cahoon Creek, on the same day as Oliver Hazard Perry's victory on Lake Erie.
  3. — Mrs. Asahel Porter drowns in Rocky River.
  4. — Joseph Cahoon dies at his home in Dover Township at age seventy-five.
  5. — The Cahoon Pioneer Association holds its first annual celebration of Joseph Cahoon's 1810 settlement, on the spot where he built his log house, using the same tea kettle from the family's first meal in Dover.
  6. — Dover Township's lake-shore region is largely devoted to grape culture, an extensive and profitable business.
  7. — Dover Township's northern strip along Lake Erie separates to form Bay Village.
  8. — Part of Dover Township's southern territory joins North Olmsted.
  9. — The remaining Dover Township residents incorporate as Dover Village -- the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History gives 1911, Wikipedia gives 1913.
  10. — Dover Village is renamed Westlake to end confusion with Dover in Tuscarawas County.
  11. — Westlake's population is 3,200.
  12. — Westlake becomes a city.
  13. — A house recently bought by Black pastor John R. Compton is firebombed in Westlake, causing about $10,000 in damage; the mayor draws criticism for saying the community should have been 'prepared to accept a Negro family.'
  14. — Westlake's population reaches 27,018, up from 15,989 in 1970 and 19,483 in 1980.

Stories

A tea kettle, a riding whip, and Perry's victory

Joseph Cahoon's family reached the mouth of what became Cahoon Creek on the morning of October 10, 1810, having traveled from Vergennes, Vermont by wagon behind four horses, with a fifth horse carrying the daughters in turns to ease a grueling trip; the family slept in the wagon-box until Cahoon finished a log house four days later. The tea kettle that cooked their very first meal in Dover Township survived in the family for generations, and when the Cahoon Pioneer Association held its first reunion on the spot in 1860, the old kettle steeped the tea and pies were baked from apples off the first fruit tree Cahoon had planted. Three years after arriving, on September 10, 1813, Cahoon raised the frame of the first grist-mill built west of the Cuyahoga River -- the very same day, an old local record notes, that Oliver Hazard Perry won his naval victory on Lake Erie, so that mill-raisings and barn-raisings all along the lakeshore shared the date with one of the war's turning points. A locust switch that Cahoon's son Joel cut as a riding whip on an 1814 errand to Brownhelm, then planted at the family homestead on his return, grew into a massive shade tree still remembered as a living relic of Dover's first family.

A firebombing and a mayor's response

In September 1966, a house in Westlake recently purchased by John R. Compton, a Black pastor, was firebombed, causing roughly $10,000 in damage though no injuries. The incident happened as Cleveland-area suburbs, almost uniformly white through the postwar building boom, were beginning -- unevenly and often reluctantly -- to face open-housing pressure. Westlake's mayor drew sharp criticism for his public response, which suggested the community should simply have been 'prepared to accept a Negro family,' a comment read by critics as excusing the attack as a predictable reaction rather than treating it as a crime. The episode is a rare specifically documented flashpoint in what was, across Cleveland's western suburbs generally, a quieter but pervasive pattern of housing discrimination in the 1960s.

Mostly estimated. Only 7% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Westlake - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,915 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
