How Wauseon began

Wauseon began in 1853 as a railroad-siding rival to Ottokee, the county's first seat, when the Michigan Southern Air Line reached the spot then platted as Litchfield; it incorporated as a village in 1859 and was renamed at settler Hortensia Hayes's suggestion for the Odawa (Ottawa) chief Wauseon. The railroad's commercial pull, which Ottokee never got, carried the town past its rival, and in 1869 voters moved the county seat to Wauseon; the move was completed in 1872 with the opening of the still-standing Italianate Fulton County Courthouse. Wauseon grew from 378 residents in 1860 to more than 7,500 today, and remains Fulton County's seat of government.

Platted 1853, as Litchfield, incorporated 1859 (village); became county seat 1869-1872, by settlers along the newly built Michigan Southern Air Line Railway.

Where the name comes from

First platted as Litchfield, after Litchfield, New York, the birthplace of many of its early settlers. Hortensia Hayes, daughter of an early settler, suggested renaming the growing town for Wauseon, an Odawa (Ottawa) chief remembered locally as having been forced by the federal government to give up his people's land and leave the region; Wikipedia's article on the town dates that removal to 1839 and names Oklahoma as the destination, though the Ottawa people's own Wikipedia article records the last Odawa band's 1839 departure from Ohio as going to Kansas, which is where other Ohio Odawa removals of the period are documented as having gone -- this discrepancy is not resolved here.

Before the town

No Native village, mound or trail sourced specifically to the ground Wauseon now occupies was located; the town's own connection to Native history is its name, taken from the Odawa chief Wauseon rather than from any documented site. The Fulton County Courthouse built in Wauseon in 1872 carries murals inside depicting interactions between Native people and Americans, itself a 20th-century commemorative choice rather than evidence of a village on the spot. Fulton County's documented Native sites are concentrated in Pike Township; the county's record also includes the 1839 Odawa removal.

Stories

The Railroad Town That Out-Ran the County Seat

When the Michigan Southern Air Line's surveyors picked their route through Fulton County in 1853, they had no obligation to run it through Ottokee, the two-year-old county seat sitting dead in the geographic middle of the county. They didn't. Instead the line passed a few miles off, through a spot that settlers from Litchfield, New York had just platted under their hometown's name. The new railroad town grew the way railroad towns did in that decade -- fast, and on freight and passenger traffic Ottokee simply could not match, however central its courthouse and jail were on the map. By the late 1860s the imbalance had become political: in 1869 Fulton County's voters chose to move the seat itself, and by 1872 the transfer was final, with the first court session held in a brand-new Italianate courthouse -- costing $45,722.27, designed by C.C. Miller and raised by builders Alexander Voss and H.B. Bensman -- in the town that, by then, had already traded its founders' New York hometown name for one honoring the Odawa chief Wauseon. Ottokee, left behind, never recovered its early promise; its courthouse and jail are long gone, and the place survives only as an unincorporated crossroads in Dover Township, while Wauseon's 1872 courthouse -- its interior painted with murals of Native and American encounters -- still serves as the seat of Fulton County government a century and a half later.
