How Strongsville began

Strongsville was settled in 1816 when John Stoughton Strong, a Vermont-born pioneer, led a party of families into the Connecticut Western Reserve township that took his name; Strong went on to recruit further settlers and help establish the area's mills, roads, schools and churches. Organized as Township No. 5 of the 14th range in 1818, it stayed a farming community -- briefly home in 1853 to the boyhood John D. Rockefeller's family -- until 20th-century suburban growth brought village incorporation in 1923 and city status in 1961. On April 11, 1965, Strongsville took some of the worst damage in the Palm Sunday tornado outbreak, and the city today is a Cleveland suburb of about 46,000 with three National Register-listed 19th-century buildings, including a house once used on the Underground Railroad.

Settled 1816, incorporated 1818-02-25 (Township No. 5, 14th range); 1923 (village); 1961 (city), by John Stoughton Strong and settling families.

Where the name comes from

Strongsville was named directly for John Stoughton Strong, the Vermont-born pioneer who led the settling party into the township in 1816 and became its leading early organizer of mills, roads, schools and churches.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Strongsville. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and confirmed by the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

A safe house on Pearl and Westwood Roads

Alanson Pomeroy built his farmhouse at the corner of Pearl and Westwood Roads in 1847, in a Strongsville still just a generation removed from its 1816 settlement. As an active member of his congregation and, by local record, a committed abolitionist, Pomeroy used the house as a station on the Underground Railroad: people fleeing slavery were sheltered there before being taken the short distance to boats on the Rocky River for passage across Lake Erie to Canada. The house survived long enough to be documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in June 1975, and in 1980 it reopened under new ownership as a restaurant and pub -- a 19th-century farmhouse built for hiding freedom-seekers now serving dinner to Strongsville residents who pass it on Pearl Road every day.

Palm Sunday, 1965

Late on the night of April 11, 1965, one of the most violent tornado outbreaks in American history tore across six Midwestern states, and one of its tracks cut through Pittsfield and Grafton before slamming into northernmost Strongsville. Meteorologists later rated the tornado F4, though researcher Ted Fujita's own reviewer, Thomas Grazulis, judged its damage borderline F5 -- eighteen homes in Strongsville were leveled, some swept cleanly from their foundations, and another fifty were severely damaged. Witnesses along the track reported an unusual sight as the storm approached Cleveland: two separate funnels, roughly half a mile apart, appearing to merge into one before touching down. Across its full path through Pittsfield, Grafton and Strongsville the tornado killed 18 people and injured roughly 200, part of an outbreak that caused so much damage across Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa that it directly led to the creation of the National Weather Service's modern tornado watch and warning system.

Mostly estimated. Only 6% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Strongsville - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
