How Strasburg began
Strasburg was founded in 1828 in Franklin Township, Tuscarawas County, and named for Strasbourg, in Alsace, France, the birthplace of many of its early settlers. It grew slowly through the 19th century as a small farming-town on Sugar Creek, passing 1,000 residents in the 1920s. Its best-known landmark, the Garver Brothers' "World's Largest Country Store," burned in an arson fire in 2010. Today it is a village of about 2,700 people anchored by Strasburg-Franklin schools.
Settled 1828, platted 1828, by early settlers from Strasbourg, in Alsace, France, and the surrounding region.
Where the name comes from
"A large share of the early settlers being natives of Strasbourg (German: Strasburg) caused the name to be selected" for the new village, founded in Franklin Township in 1828.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, or treaty site specific to Strasburg or Franklin Township is documented in the sources consulted. The village sits within the Tuscarawas River watershed that was Delaware (Lenape) country through the 18th century and was ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Greenville (1795). The county-wide Native history includes the Moravian mission towns, Fort Laurens, and the treaties that opened this ground to settlement.

Stories
The World's Largest Country Store
The Garver brothers opened their first store in Strasburg in 1866. When fire destroyed that building, they replaced it in 1902 with a three-story structure at 134 N. Wooster Avenue with walls of brick and concrete, a five-bay facade, an arched central entrance, and large display windows — built to hold a business they advertised as the "World's Largest Country Store," stocking dry goods, groceries, furniture, and even pianos under one roof for the surrounding farm township. The building outlived that business by decades, later serving as a flea market, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 for its architecture and its place in the village's commercial history. It did not survive to its second century: arsonists burned it to the ground on the night of October 13-14, 2010, ending 144 years of the Garver name in Strasburg retail.

48,501 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
