How Solon began

Solon's first settlers arrived from Connecticut in 1820 as part of the broader Western Reserve migration, and the township grew as a farming community producing corn, wheat and dairy, supporting five cheese factories by the mid-1800s; a Cleveland-Youngstown rail line reached the town in 1857. It was named for Lorenzo Solon Bull, son of early settler Isaac Bull, whose middle name honored the ancient Athenian lawgiver Solon. Solon stayed a small farm town -- laid out on a New England plan around a public square -- until incorporating as a village in 1927 and becoming a city in 1961; industrial development, beginning with the Bready Cultimotor tractor company in 1929, and the 1991 extension of divided US 422 later turned it into a substantial Cleveland-area suburb of about 24,000, one that became known for pioneering comprehensive zoning balancing industry and residential land.

Where the name comes from

The town was named for Lorenzo Solon Bull, son of early settler Isaac Bull; his middle name, Solon, was chosen for the ancient Athenian lawgiver remembered as a founder of democracy.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Solon. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

A lawgiver's name on a Western Reserve farm town

When Connecticut families settling the township in the 1820s needed a name, they landed on one honoring Isaac Bull's son, Lorenzo Solon Bull -- and specifically his middle name, chosen for the ancient Athenian statesman Solon, remembered across the centuries as a founding figure of democratic government. It was an ambitious classical reference for what stayed, for more than a century afterward, a modest farm township: corn, wheat and dairy country with five cheese factories by mid-century, laid out New England-style around a public square, linked to the outside world mainly by a Cleveland-Youngstown rail line built in 1857. Solon did not even incorporate as a village until 1927, and stayed under 6,500 residents as late as 1960 -- a low-key inheritance for a name borrowed from one of the ancient world's most consequential lawmakers.
