How Smithville began

Smithville sits along Sugar Creek in Green Township, named for early settler Thomas Smith. Its population grew from 546 in 1880 to a peak of 1,467 in 1980 before settling near 1,338 by 2020. The village has produced a notably varied set of nationally known people, including U.S. Senator Kirtland I. Perky (from Idaho), ambassador David Dale Reimer, journalist Dale Willman, and Mennonite theologian John Howard Yoder, and today hosts the Wayne County Schools Career Center.

Settled 1818, platted 1836 (re-platted; an 1831 plat was vacated), by David Birney Sr., Joseph Musser, John Shroll and Luther Carey (1836 plat, surveyed by Campbell Bell); Thomas Smith (1818 first cabin and 1831 plat).

Where the name comes from

Smithville took its name from Thomas Smith, who built the first cabin in the neighborhood in 1818.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty event specific to Smithville itself was found, but Green Township's own chapter in the 1878 county history notes that visible remains of a Native American village were still present on section 21 of the township as late as 1819 -- a site the source does not name, describe further or connect to a specific historic nation.

Timeline

  1. — Population recorded at 546.
  2. — Village population peaks at 1,467.
  3. — A former middle school building in the area is demolished.
  4. — Population recorded at 1,338.
  5. — Thomas Smith builds the first cabin in the neighborhood, on the north-west side of the Portage road; Reasin Beall opens the first store, in one end of Smith's cabin, and Smith becomes the first postmaster, an office he holds into Andrew Jackson's first administration.
  6. — Thomas Smith lays out a village around his cabin, but the site is vacated on account of low ground.
  7. — David Birney Sr., Joseph Musser, John Shroll and Luther Carey lay out a new, forty-one-lot village, surveyed by Campbell Bell, forming the central part of present-day Smithville. David Brenizer puts up the first building; Jacob Musser the second; and a tavern known as "Widow Johnson's" the third. Judge Smith Orr and Jonathan Casebier open the first store in the new village the following spring.
  8. — Green Township's nine church organizations are founded in sequence beginning with the Methodists in 1814 and the Amish in 1816, followed over the following five decades by German Baptist (Dunkard), Presbyterian, Winebrenarian, Brethren in Christ, Evangelical Lutheran, United Brethren and one further congregation organized in 1867.

Stories

A small village, four very different careers

For a village of little more than a thousand people, Smithville's list of notable natives spans an unusually wide range of American public life. Kirtland I. Perky left Ohio to become a United States Senator from Idaho; David Dale Reimer became a career diplomat, serving as U.S. ambassador to Mauritius, Seychelles and Sierra Leone; Dale Willman built a career as an award-winning journalist; and John Howard Yoder became one of the most influential Mennonite theologians and Christian ethicists of the twentieth century, his work on pacifism and Christian nonviolence studied well beyond Mennonite circles. None of the four followed the others into the same field, and their shared origin in a small Wayne County village named for an early settler is largely coincidental — but it is a reminder that a place this size can send people in almost any direction.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
