How Shreve began
Shreve sits in southeastern Clinton Township, in Wayne County's southwest, named for Thomas Shreve, the original owner of the town site. The village is drained by Shreve Creek, a tributary of Killbuck Creek, and the Killbuck Marsh just outside the village limits is known locally as Shreve Swamp. Population grew from 479 in 1870 to 908 by 1880, an 89.6 percent jump, before peaking around 1,617 in 1960 and settling at 1,497 by 2020. The village produced two people of note: Jim Carmichael, who served as both mayor of Shreve and an Ohio state representative, and Catherine Dobbs, who went on to become mayor of Barberton, Ohio from 1956 to 1961.
Platted 1853, incorporated 1859-12-26, by D. Foltz and George Stewart (north half); Thomas McConkey and D. K. Jones (south half).
Where the name comes from
Shreve, named after Thomas Shreve, was originally called Clinton Station. Its beginning and growth date from the completion of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway.
Before the town
No Native American village, trail, mound or treaty event specific to Shreve was found in the sources checked. Killbuck Marsh, adjoining the village and known locally as Shreve Swamp, sits within the broader Killbuck Creek watershed associated with the Delaware leader Killbuck (Gelelemend) further north in the county.

- — Population reaches 908, an 89.6 percent increase over the decade.
- — Village population peaks at approximately 1,617.

Jones, the first lot buyer, becomes the first postmaster and opens the first dry-goods store; Christian Roth builds the first hotel.

Stories
A railroad depot becomes Clinton Station, then Shreve
The 1878 county history records that Shreve had no existence before the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railway reached the spot, and that its first name, Clinton Station, described exactly what it was: a stop on the new line, named for the township it sat in. Two landowning partnerships divided the ten acres on either side of the tracks in 1853, D. Foltz and George Stewart to the north and Thomas McConkey and D. K. Jones to the south, and sold the first lots that spring. Neal Power put up the first house that same year, a two-story frame building. D. K. Jones, the first buyer of village lots, went on to become both the first postmaster and the first dry-goods merchant, while Christian Roth built the first hotel and Dr. W. Battles arrived as the first physician in 1855. Within six years of its first lot sale the village had grown enough to incorporate, on December 26, 1859, with V. D. Manson elected its first mayor the following March.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
