How Saint Bernard began

St. Bernard was laid out in 1851 at the meeting point of Vine Street, the Miami and Erie Canal and the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway, and was built up chiefly by German immigrants. It was incorporated as a village on March 8, 1878 and counted 1,073 residents in 1880, when Andrew Erkenbrecker's starch factories stood in the village. Together with Norwood and Elmwood Place it is now surrounded by the city of Cincinnati. It had 4,070 residents in 2020.

Platted 1851, incorporated 1878, by Platted at the crossing of Vine Street, the Miami and Erie Canal and the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway; built up chiefly by German settlers.

Stories

A canal-and-rail town of German settlers

St. Bernard was laid out in 1851 where the Miami and Erie Canal crossed the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railway, and Wikipedia says it was built up chiefly by Germans. The 1881 county history says Joseph Kleine and J. B. Schroder laid it out south of the Marietta & Cincinnati railroad and that it was incorporated on March 8, 1878. In June 1880 it had 1,073 residents, Andrew Erkenbrecker's starch factories and an organised fire department. The St. Clement Catholic church, built in 1873 with 600 sittings and a spire 170 feet high, had a parochial school of about 110 pupils by 1880.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Saint Bernard, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

44,376 days of records, 1905-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
