How Rocky River began

The area later called Rocky River saw a documented visit long before its 1810 settlement: on October 18, 1764, British Colonel John Bradstreet, leading 1,400 men to relieve Fort Detroit during Pontiac's War, put ashore at what is now Bradstreet's Landing Park after a Lake Erie storm damaged his boats. The permanent town, named for the river forming its eastern border, incorporated as a village in 1903 and became a city in 1960. It is best known architecturally for the 1925 Hotel Westlake, a 400-room Spanish Renaissance luxury hotel that hosted Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh before a 1962 fire ended its run as a hotel; converted to apartments and later condominiums, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Rocky River is today a Lake Erie suburb of about 22,000.

Settled 1810, incorporated 1903 (village); 1960 (city).

Where the name comes from

Rocky River takes its name from the river that forms the city's eastern border.

Before the town

The area's earliest documented historic-era event predates permanent settlement by nearly half a century: on October 18, 1764, British Colonel John Bradstreet, leading roughly 1,400 men along Lake Erie to relieve Fort Detroit during Pontiac's War, came ashore at what is now Bradstreet's Landing Park in Rocky River after a storm damaged his boats -- Wikipedia's article on Rocky River notes that, despite persistent rumors, only one life was lost in the incident. Bradstreet's campaign that year was aimed at pressuring the Native nations allied against the British in Pontiac's War into peace, and his own Wikipedia biography records that he exceeded his orders by negotiating independent treaties with some of those nations rather than pursuing them militarily. No source we reviewed names a specific Native village, trail or burial site within present Rocky River itself.

Stories

The pink palace on Lake Erie

Hotel Westlake opened in 1925 as one of the country's first suburban luxury hotels, its 400 rooms and Spanish Renaissance facade -- locals called it the 'pink palace' -- drawing aviators as famous as Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh, and, during Prohibition, bootleggers who found its Lake Erie shoreline location convenient. The 1929 crash hit it hard: the owners tried to auction it in 1931 for a $1.05 million opening bid, found no buyer, and eventually lost it to receivership, where it sold in 1935 for just $151,000, a fraction of its cost. It survived as a hotel until January 25, 1962, when a kitchen grease fire spread to the roof and did $500,000 in damage; the building reopened that same year as an apartment complex instead. By the 1970s it had deteriorated badly, but a 1983 developer bought and converted it into 98 condominium units for $13 million -- the same year, October 20, 1983, that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, a hotel-turned-apartments-turned-condos still standing on the same stretch of Lake Road.

A storm-tossed landing on the way to Fort Detroit

Nearly half a century before Rocky River had a permanent settler, Colonel John Bradstreet brought roughly 1,400 British troops along the Lake Erie shore in 1764, ordered to relieve Fort Detroit during Pontiac's War -- the widespread Native uprising against British rule in the Great Lakes following the French and Indian War. A storm damaged his boats and forced a landing on October 18, 1764, at the spot Rocky River now calls Bradstreet's Landing Park; Wikipedia's account of the city notes that, despite rumors that persisted long afterward, the mishap cost only one life. Bradstreet went on to draw criticism from his own superiors for the rest of that campaign, accused of exceeding his authority by negotiating independent peace terms with some of the Native nations he had been sent to fight rather than pressing the war more aggressively -- a small, storm-forced stop on Rocky River's future shoreline, folded into a much larger and more contested chapter of the region's Native and colonial history.

Mostly estimated. Only 1% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Rocky River - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
