How Rocky Ridge began

Rocky Ridge is a village in southeastern Benton Township that grew up in the timber-clearing years after the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern railroad was graded through the township in 1852-53. The 1896 county biographical record credits Dr. Joseph Kingham, who began a lime business in 1878, a sawmill in 1882 and a grain elevator and flour mill in 1889, as the man to whom the town owed its existence. By the 1890s it had Lutheran and Methodist churches, a high school, a post office and a village council. Its population peaked at 483 in 1890 and was 312 in 2020.

Stories

A town credited to one doctor

Joseph Kingham was born at Port Clinton in 1839, served with the hundred-days men in 1864, and took a medical degree at the University of Michigan in 1866. While practicing in Port Clinton from 1875 he built up business interests in Benton Township: lime manufacturing from 1878, a sawmill and lumber business from 1882, and a drug store at Rocky Ridge that grew into a general store. In 1886 he moved to Rocky Ridge to manage them, and in 1889 he built a grain elevator and flour mill that handled the wheat, oats and corn of the surrounding farms. His wife kept the books for the grain business. The county's 1896 biographical record said that if Rocky Ridge owed its existence and prosperity to any one man, it was to Kingham.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
