How Port Clinton began

Port Clinton was established in 1828 at the mouth of the Portage River on Lake Erie, and named for New York governor DeWitt Clinton in recognition of the Erie Canal he championed, which had just opened the Great Lakes to eastern markets. It became the seat of Ottawa County when the county organized in 1840, and grew through the nineteenth century as a modest farm-market town built around a sawmill, before Lake Erie's walleye fishery and, later, lake tourism remade its economy in the twentieth century. Today the city calls itself the "Walleye Capital of the World" and marks each New Year's Eve with a mechanical walleye "drop," a nod to an industry that has anchored the waterfront for more than a century.

Platted 1828.

Where the name comes from

Named for DeWitt Clinton, governor of New York, who was instrumental in building the Erie Canal, the waterway that linked the Great Lakes to the Hudson River and eastern markets.

Before the town

No source found records a Native village, trail, or other site specific to the ground that became Port Clinton. The county is named for the Ottawa (Odawa) people, and the 1805 and 1807 treaties opened the area to settlement. Two National Register listings under Port Clinton's shared 43452 zip code -- the Catawba Island Wine Company and the Betsy Mo-John Cabin, the latter described in National Register records as about four miles east of Port Clinton -- are in fact both sited in neighboring Catawba Island Township, not the city itself.

Stories

From sawmill town to Walleye Capital

Nineteenth-century Port Clinton was, by its own newspapers' account, an unremarkable farm town: a sawmill run by A. Couche & Company was the largest employer through the 1880s, and most other businesses existed to serve the surrounding countryside rather than travelers. What changed the town's fortunes was the lake at its front door. The western basin of Lake Erie, fed by the Maumee, Portage, and Sandusky rivers, turned out to be exceptionally productive water for walleye, and by the twentieth century Port Clinton's charter-boat fleet and fish houses had built a reputation that eventually gave the city its self-declared title of "Walleye Capital of the World." The nickname is now performed literally each December 31, when a several-hundred-pound fiberglass walleye named Wylie is lowered from a crane in imitation of the ball drop in New York's Times Square, drawing crowds to a waterfront that a century earlier was better known for lumber than for tourists.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
