How North Royalton began

Melzar Clark, who had arrived with Seth Paine in neighboring Brecksville Township in 1811, is recorded as the first settler within what became Royalton Township, formally organized on October 27, 1818 and named for the Vermont hometown of early settlers David and Knight Sprague. It stayed a farming and dairying township for more than a century -- Royalton Center held a town hall, three general stores, three churches and an Odd Fellows lodge -- renamed North Royalton in 1881 to distinguish it from another Royalton, Ohio, and incorporating as a village only in 1927 and a city in 1961. Its population then grew explosively in the postwar decades, from 1,262 in 1920 to 9,290 by 1960. North Royalton is now a residential Cleveland suburb of about 31,000, with the 1833 Greek Revival John M. Annis House on State Road and the 1855 Smith-Rutledge house, now the James Buckingham Museum, among its surviving 19th-century landmarks.

Settled 1811 (Melzar Clark), incorporated 1818-10-27 (township, formed; voted into existence 1818-11-06); 1927-04-04 (village); 1961 (city), by Melzar Clark; David and Knight Sprague.

Where the name comes from

The township was named after the Vermont hometown of two early settlers, David and Knight Sprague. It was renamed North Royalton Township in 1881 to distinguish it from another Royalton, Ohio, elsewhere in the state (Wikipedia's article on North Royalton gives this renaming as occurring sometime between about 1880 and 1890; both are given here since neither source pins an exact year with certainty).

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present North Royalton. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

A farm township that waited a century to become a suburb

Melzar Clark and Seth Paine settled Brecksville Township together in June 1811, but Clark soon moved on to the still-emptier land to the west that would become Royalton, formally organized in 1818 and named for the Vermont town David and Knight Sprague had left behind. The township grew as a dairying community -- Royalton Center's town hall, three general stores, three churches and Odd Fellows lodge served a population that reached its first framed schoolhouse only in 1829 and its first high school not until 1907 -- and did not even settle on its final name until 1881, when 'North' was added to distinguish it from another Royalton elsewhere in Ohio. The 1833 Greek Revival farmhouse built for John M. Annis on State Road, one of the township's oldest surviving buildings, stood through nearly all of that slow, rural stretch. The change, when it came, arrived fast: North Royalton's population was still just 1,262 in 1920, but by 1960 -- a single generation later, and only a year before the community became a city -- it had grown more than sevenfold to 9,290, part of the same postwar wave of Cleveland-suburb building that transformed dozens of once-rural Cuyahoga County townships in the same decades.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside North Royalton, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
