How North Ridgeville began

North Ridgeville traces its first settlement to 1810, taking its name from a ridge running near the original town site. It grew slowly as a farming community for a century and a half before exploding into one of the fastest-growing cities in northern Ohio in the late twentieth century, expanding from 8,057 residents in 1960 to 35,280 by 2020. Two of its buildings -- the former Town Hall and the 1850 Samuel C. Cahoon House -- are on the National Register of Historic Places. Its best-known local tradition, the Corn Festival, began in 1975 as a small bicentennial fundraiser for the library and has continued as a community event ever since.

Settled 6 July 1810 (Tillotson Terrell, first family); spring 1810 (main party from Waterbury, Connecticut), incorporated Township organized spring 1813; village and city incorporation dates not found, by David Beebe Sr. and the Terrell family.

Where the name comes from

The city takes its name from a ridge running near the original settlement site.

Before the town

The 1879 county history records an 'Indian trail' that led from Columbia through Ridgeville to the mouth of the Black River; a Mrs. Terrell, lost in the woods in 1810, found it by accident and followed it home, and in the panic of August 1813 Ichabod Terrell took the old Indian trail to Columbia with his family's cart. After the war Native families came to the township's tavern kept by Wyllis Terrell, which they named 'the Indian Tavern': a band of about twenty men brought their wives and children to see the wonderful place, and one hung a pair of deer antlers on its front. They often came to the nearby Cahoon mill for meal and bought on trust, and small bands passed and spent nights at the house for a number of years; the old log building was torn down in 1821 and a frame tavern built in 1822. Major Joel Terrell treated them kindly and exacted a promise that they would not get drunk. The history gives no nation. One GNIS historical place name in the city's ZIP code, 'Shawville,' might suggest a Shawnee association, but no source confirms it.

Timeline

  1. — Ephraim Root of Hartford draws Town 6, Range 16 (Ridgeville) in the Western Reserve land draft; for a few years after its settlement it is called Rootstown for Lyman Root, an original owner.
  2. — Oliver Terrell, Ichabod Terrell and David Beebe Sr., of Waterbury, Connecticut, exchange their New England farms with township proprietor Ephraim Root for more than a quarter of Ridgeville township, choosing the northeast quarter plus land on Butternut Ridge.
  3. — A party of twelve or thirteen men -- David Beebe and his sons David and Loman, four more Terrells, Lyman Root, Sheldon Wooster, Mansfield Webb, the Hotchkiss brothers and Ira B. Morgan -- walks from Waterbury, Connecticut, with knapsacks on their backs, buying tools at Buffalo and shipping them by sailboat to Cleveland before continuing on foot to found the settlement.
  4. — Tillotson Terrell arrives with his wife and three children and is the first family to settle in the township; that fall the families of David Beebe Sr., Lyman Root and Ichabod Terrell (including Rhoda Terrell, a survivor of the Wyoming massacre) come, seven weeks on the road from Waterbury, and cut a wagon road from Rocky River.

Stories

A library fundraiser that became a tradition

North Ridgeville's best-known annual event did not start as a festival at all -- it started as a way to pay for moving the library. In 1975, with the country's bicentennial a year away, a local Bicentennial Committee organized a modest fundraiser built around corn, the crop that had defined the area's farmland for a century and a half. The first event ran just six hours and featured 13 booths. It worked well enough, and drew enough of the community out, that organizers ran it again the next year, then renamed it the Corn Festival in 1977 and kept it going. The festival has outlasted the farmland it was named for: North Ridgeville spent the following decades as one of the fastest-growing cities in northern Ohio, its population more than quadrupling between 1960 and 2020 as subdivisions replaced the fields, while the Corn Festival kept its name and its place on the community calendar.

The Indian Tavern

Wyllis Terrell, son of the township's first justice of the peace Major Joel Terrell, opened his log house as a tavern on the ridge road, and it quickly became a favorite stop for the Native families who passed along the old trail from Columbia to the mouth of the Black River. Major Terrell always treated them kindly, sometimes gave in to requests for liquor but made them promise not to get drunk, which they are said to have kept, and sold them meal from the Cahoon mill on trust. They repaid the family with presents. The Native visitors named it 'the Indian Tavern,' and on one occasion some twenty men brought their wives and children to see it. Afterward one visitor brought a pair of deer antlers and fastened them over the front. Bands passed and stayed overnight for years. The log house was torn down in 1821, and a frame tavern built in 1822 where Major Terrell kept house until his death.

Mill, flour and a six-dollar judgment

Until Joseph Cahoon built his grist mill in the spring of 1813, Ridgeville settlers carried their grain forty miles to Chagrin Falls. The first lawsuit in the township came from the first batch: on 17 June 1813 Loman C. Beebe complained that Cahoon had made 111 pounds less flour, and worse flour, from 28 bushels of wheat than Captain Calvin Hoadley's mill generally made. The court, a Columbia justice sitting at David Beebe's house, compared the flour with Hoadley's and awarded Beebe six dollars damages and costs. The same year, the sound of the Battle of Lake Erie rolled over the township on 10 September, and Mrs. Beebe counted sixty guns before the firing ran together.
