How New Lexington began
New Lexington was settled in 1817 by James Comly, who platted 64 lots and sold them for $25 to $50 apiece, naming the place for Lexington, Massachusetts. It grew slowly as a farm-trade town with a tannery, a hat shop and a tavern until 1857, when it won a bitter, multi-year contest against Somerset and Rehoboth for the Perry County seat. The coal boom of the late 1880s and, from 1902, the Ludowici roof-tile works (still operating) built the village into the county's largest community. Today New Lexington is the seat of Perry County government and home to the 1887 Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse that replaced an 1857 predecessor.
Settled 1817, platted 1817, by James Comly.
Where the name comes from
Named for Lexington, Massachusetts.
Before the town
No Native American village, mound or named site is recorded within present-day New Lexington itself. The 1883 county history places the land in territory used as shared hunting ground by the Shawnee, Delaware (Lenape) and Wyandot between the Muskingum and Scioto rivers, crossed by Indian trails through Perry County, and opened to settlement after Wayne's 1795 Treaty of Greenville; James Comly's 1817 arrival came within the generation after that opening.
Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories
A courthouse fight settled by the Supreme Court
Perry County's seat sat at Somerset from the county's 1817 creation, but by the 1850s New Lexington, more centrally located, wanted it. The contest ran through three new state laws, three elections and two rulings of the Ohio Supreme Court before New Lexington finally prevailed. County offices moved from Somerset to New Lexington in early 1857, and the older village never recovered the role. New Lexington's 1857 courthouse itself proved inadequate within thirty years, as the county's business grew, and was replaced in 1887 by the grand Richardsonian Romanesque building that still stands on Main and Brown Streets.
Sheridan's horse from Perry County
General Philip Sheridan, who grew up thirteen miles away in Somerset, rode a horse named Rienzi through the Civil War's Shenandoah Valley campaign, most famously in Sheridan's dramatic ride to rally retreating Union troops at Cedar Creek in 1864. Rienzi, later renamed Winchester in honor of that ride, is remembered locally as having come from the New Lexington area, a detail Perry County has kept alive alongside its Sheridan connections centered on Somerset.

49,721 days of records, 1887-08-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
