How Lorain began

Lorain grew up as an unincorporated settlement called Black River Village at the mouth of the Black River on Lake Erie, briefly renamed Charleston in 1837 though residents kept calling it Black River anyway; it incorporated as the village of Lorain in 1874 under first mayor Conrad Reid and became a city in 1896. Its deep, sheltered harbor drew heavy industry -- the American Ship Building Company's yard, a United States Steel mill, and a Ford Motor Company assembly plant -- making Lorain a Great Lakes steel and shipbuilding port through the twentieth century. The city's population grew from 1,595 in 1880 to a peak near 78,000 by 1970. Its worst single day came on June 28, 1924, when a tornado killed 72 residents, 15 of them in a collapsed downtown theater, the deadliest tornado death toll inside a single building in Ohio history.

Settled before 1834 (as the unincorporated Black River Village), incorporated 1874 (village, as Lorain, first mayor Conrad Reid, took office April 6, 1874), 1896 (city), by early Black River-mouth settlers; formally incorporated under Conrad Reid.

Where the name comes from

The settlement was first called Black River Village for its location at the Black River's mouth, then briefly renamed Charleston in 1837 -- a name residents largely ignored, continuing to call the place Black River. It was incorporated in 1874 as Lorain, sharing the name the county itself took from the Lorraine region on the France-Germany border.

Before the town

No Native American village, trail, or site specific to the city of Lorain is documented in the sources consulted. The Black River, at whose mouth the city sits, was known to French traders in the 1700s by other names ('Reneshoua River,' 'la Riviere de la Cuiliere'), evidence of an earlier indigenous and colonial presence on the waterway, and 18th-century explorers used the river mouth as a harboring spot -- but no dated Native settlement at the site itself is recorded. Lorain County's broader Native history includes a Moravian mission attempt a few miles up the Black River in 1787.

Timeline

  1. — Black River Village exists as an unincorporated settlement at the mouth of the Black River before this date.
  2. — The village is renamed Charleston, a name residents mostly ignore in favor of the older Black River.
  3. — The village incorporates as Lorain on April 6, with Conrad Reid as first mayor.
  4. — Lorain becomes a city.
  5. — The American Ship Building Company's Lorain yard launches the Great Lakes freighter SS Greater Detroit.
  6. — A tornado tears through Lorain, killing 72 people, including 15 in a collapsed theater and 8 in a nearby bathhouse -- the deadliest tornado to hit a single building in Ohio history.
  7. — Lorain's population peaks at 78,185 before beginning a Rust Belt decline.

Stories

A city that outgrew three names

Before it was Lorain, the settlement at the Black River's mouth on Lake Erie went by whatever people felt like calling it. Early residents knew it simply as Black River Village. In 1837 promoters tried to rebrand it Charleston, hoping for something grander, but the name never caught on with the people who actually lived there, who kept saying Black River regardless of what the map said. It took until 1874 for the village to formally incorporate, and when it did, it took the name of the county around it -- Lorain -- with Conrad Reid sworn in as the first mayor on April 6 of that year. Twenty-two years later, in 1896, it became a city. By then its harbor was already pulling in heavy industry: a shipyard, a steel mill, and eventually a Ford assembly plant, all drawn by the same deep, sheltered river mouth that had given the settlement its first, discarded name.

The deadliest tornado to hit a single Ohio building

On June 28, 1924, a tornado cut through Lorain and killed 72 people in a matter of minutes. Fifteen of them died inside a single collapsed theater downtown -- still, in Ohio's recorded history, the worst tornado death toll ever suffered inside one building -- and eight more died in a nearby bathhouse that also came down. The storm struck a city that had spent the previous half-century building itself into a Great Lakes industrial port: a shipyard capable of launching lake freighters, a United States Steel mill, and a Ford Motor Company assembly plant, all clustered around the harbor at the mouth of the Black River. Photographs taken afterward at the corner of 6th Street and Washington Avenue show the scale of the wreckage, block after block reduced to timber and brick. The city rebuilt and kept growing for another four and a half decades, reaching a peak population near 78,000 by 1970.

Mostly estimated. Only 3% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Lorain - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,475 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
