How Lakewood began

Lakewood grew out of Rockport Township, organized in 1819 on land a Judson Canfield-led syndicate had bought from the Connecticut Land Company in 1807; James Nicholson's 1818 arrival is credited as the township's first permanent settlement. Farming and fruit growing along Lake Erie's south shore gave way to a streetcar suburb once Cleveland's Detroit Avenue line reached the area in 1893, and the growing community incorporated as the village of Lakewood in 1889, taking its name from its lakefront setting. Dense residential development followed through the early 20th century, including the Birdtown district built by the National Carbon Company for its immigrant workforce, and Lakewood is now a compact, largely built-out 'City of Homes' of about 51,000 people on Cleveland's western border.

Where the name comes from

Lakewood was incorporated as a village in 1889 and named simply for its position along the Lake Erie shoreline; no source we reviewed records a more specific naming story or namer.

Before the town

Wikipedia's article on Lakewood states that the area was used by the Odawa (Ottawa), Potawatomi, Ojibwe (Chippewa), Wyandot, Munsee, Lenape (Delaware) and Shawnee before the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry ceded roughly 500,000 acres of northern Ohio, including this stretch of the Connecticut Western Reserve's Firelands boundary area, to the United States for about $18,000 -- roughly 3.5 cents an acre. The land was formally surveyed as Rockport Township in 1806-07 and sold to the Canfield syndicate in 1807, more than a decade before Nicholson's 1818 settlement, so organized Euro-American occupation followed directly on the treaty cession. No source reviewed identifies a specific named village, trail or burial site within present Lakewood.

Stories

Birdtown: a company's housing plan on bird-named streets

The National Carbon Company, founded in 1891 at the Cleveland-Lakewood line to make batteries and carbon products, found in the 1890s that its growing immigrant workforce -- mostly Slovak families -- faced a punishing commute over muddy, unlit roads to reach the plant. In 1892 the company bought 155 acres just south of its works and, with the Pleasant Hill Land Company, platted more than 400 residential lots on streets named for birds thought native to the area -- Robin, Plover, Lark, Thrush and others -- giving the neighborhood its lasting nickname, Birdtown. Workers built and meticulously kept up their own homes on the lots, and the district had grown to nearly 2,200 residents by 1910. Its street grid and worker-built housing stock survived intact enough that Birdtown was listed as a National Register Historic District in 2006, one of relatively few company-linked immigrant worker neighborhoods in the Cleveland area still recognizable as such.

From plank road to streetcar suburb

For most of the 19th century Rockport Township, organized in 1819 along the Lake Erie shore, stayed farm and orchard country, its produce hauled into Cleveland over the Rockport Plank Road Company's wooden toll road, built in 1848 and operated for more than fifty years. That changed fast once rail-based transit arrived: a Detroit Avenue streetcar line reached the area in 1893, a Clifton Boulevard line followed in 1903, and a Madison Avenue line in 1916, each one making it easier for Clevelanders to live in Lakewood -- incorporated as its own village in 1889 -- and commute downtown. The shift from farm township to dense streetcar suburb happened within a single lifetime: the same stretch of shoreline that had eighteen farm families in 1819 was a fully built-out 'City of Homes' by the time its 1916 Detroit Avenue library building opened.
