How Holgate began
Holgate was surveyed and platted in 1873 at the junction of the newly completed Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the older Napoleon and Kalida wagon pike, straddling the line between Pleasant and Flat Rock townships in southern Henry County. Settled overwhelmingly by German-speaking immigrants from Bavaria and Baden, the village grew quickly once a second railroad reached it in 1880, and by the late 1880s supported dozens of businesses, five livery stables, two hotels and its own weekly newspaper, the Holgate Times. It drew trade away from the older canal town of Florida to its north as the railroad era replaced the Miami and Erie Canal.
Settled German immigrants from Bavaria and Baden from 1836 in the surrounding area, platted 1873, incorporated by the late 1880s (exact date not found), by Andrew J. Weaver and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's arrival.
Where the name comes from
Wikipedia, citing Overman's Ohio Town Names (1958), says the village honors William Holgate, the original owner of the town site. The 1888 county history gives no reason for the name.
Before the town
No Native village, mound, trail or treaty site specific to the Holgate town site is documented; the 1888 county history's account of the area begins with German-speaking settlement in the 1830s and gives no earlier reference point. The broader area was within the territory ceded under the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids, and lay south of the Maumee River corridor where the county's documented Ottawa sites are concentrated.

Stories
A railroad crossroads that outgrew the canal town
Holgate did not exist before the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reached its future site in 1873; the same year the line was completed, Andrew J. Weaver platted the village and opened its first general store. A second line, the Toledo, St. Louis and Kansas City, arrived in 1880, giving Holgate rail connections in four directions plus two wagon roads -- a location the county historian called desirable for business almost by design. The new town's growth came partly at older Florida's expense: as the canal that had sustained Florida's trade for decades lost out to the railroads, 'Holgate, a new town on that road, cut the trade again,' in the words of the 1888 history, leaving Florida with only a fraction of its earlier commerce. By the time that history was written, Holgate's roughly 1,300 residents, most of them German-speaking Catholics and Lutherans whose parents had come from Bavaria and Baden in the 1830s, supported a brick schoolhouse, five livery stables, two hotels, seven saloons and a weekly newspaper -- a boomtown built entirely on the railroad era that had displaced the canal town just to its north.
The farm that became a village
William Kaufman was born in Prussia in 1841 and came to America with his parents in 1859. He and his brother Lorenc enlisted in August 1862 in Company B of the 100th Ohio and served to the end of the war; Lorenc died a prisoner in Libby Prison in 1864. In 1866 William bought 80 acres of heavily timbered land where the village of Holgate now stands. When the Baltimore and Ohio arrived in 1873 and the town was platted beside his farm, the part around his property took the name Kaufmanville, and by the 1880s he ran a drug store there. He was later a mayor, councilman and postmaster, and the 1888 county history shows him farming and making ash salts.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
