How Hicksville began
Hicksville was laid out in 1836 for John A. Bryan, Henry W. Hicks and Isaac S. Smith by the surveyor Miller Arrowsmith as the town site of the Hicks Land Company and the American Land Company, who held about 23,000 acres in the township and hoped to sell it on speculation; the town was named for the Hickses. The company's agent Ephraim Burwell was told in May 1836 to start the business, and Alfred P. Edgerton took charge in April 1837, building mills in 1838-39 that burned in 1840, were rebuilt in 1841-42 and burned again in 1850. The crash of 1837 left land selling below the government price. A post office opened in 1838, the first school about 1839, and the village incorporated in 1871.
Settled 1836, platted 1836, incorporated 1871, by Hicks Land Company, American Land Company; surveyor Miller Arrowsmith; agent Ephraim Burwell, then A. P. Edgerton.
Where the name comes from
Warner's 1883 county history says the town was founded by the members of the land companies and called after the Hickses, that is, Henry W. Hicks and the firm of Samuel Hicks & Sons of New York; the Hicks Land Company lands were entered in 1835-36 in the names of Henry W. Hicks and Isaac S. Smith.
Before the town
No Native village, trail or treaty site specific to Hicksville itself is recorded; the town was platted in 1835-1836, nearly two decades after the 1817 Treaty of Fort Meigs opened this part of northwestern Ohio to settlement. An Ottawa presence is recorded through the 1840s in neighboring Farmer and Milford townships.
Timeline
- — The Hicks Land Company, led by Henry W. Hicks, begins platting the community that becomes Hicksville.
- — On May 26 Ephraim Burwell, sent by the land companies' agent John A. Bryan, is told to start operations and "be cautious in the selection of a town site"; Hicksville is laid out and surveyed by Miller Arrowsmith, and a saw mill is begun; Burwell's management loses a large sum.
- — A. P. Edgerton reaches the village on April 17 and finds a log cabin at the crossing of Main and High streets, boarding houses and a saw mill; the first piece of land in the township is sold on April 23 to Buenos Ayres, and a cabin raised on a Sunday because no men could spare another day.
- — A post office opens at Hicksville.
- — A mail contract of September 29 with David Landis brings a fortnightly mail from Cranesville to Hicksville; Edgerton builds the first mills, completed in 1838-39 at a cost of $20,323, and the first wedding is held that November when Allen Parker marries Esther Osborn.
- — Ransom Osborn teaches the first school at Hicksville (the scan's year is partly illegible), with five pupils, two of them his own daughters; it stays a district school until a special district is set up in 1873.
- — On December 10 the Hicksville mills burn, a great loss to the country around; the company rebuilds in 1841-42 at a cost of $6,542, and the new mills burn on January 9, 1850.
- — The Union Presbyterian Church is organized in Farmer Township by Rev. John M. Crabb on September 2 with fourteen members; the Hicksville Presbyterian church is organized May 12, 1855, with twenty-four members.
- — Hicksville incorporates as a village.
- — St. Paul's Episcopal Church, a Carpenter Gothic building designed by architect Joseph C. Talbot, is built on High Street; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places under that same date in 1976.
- — In March the voters decide 55 to 4 to set up a special school district, and in 1874 the main part of the present brick school building is finished at a contract price of $7,450, later doubled by interest and extras.
- — Warner's county history lists Hicksville's mayors since incorporation in 1871 (Thomas C. Kinmont, James B. Coulter, A. Summers, J. E. Coulter) and its Presbyterian ministers, among them Rev. J. M. Crabb, John M. Layman and S. S. Hyde.
- — In chapter 33 of Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer claims to be a stranger from Hicksville, Ohio; Wikipedia dates the village's literary debut to 1885.
Stories
Tom Sawyer's borrowed hometown
Hicksville was platted in 1835 and 1836 by the Hicks Land Company, led by Henry W. Hicks, and incorporated as a village in 1871. Wikipedia says the village made its debut in American literature in 1885, when Mark Twain mentioned it in chapter 33 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, where Tom Sawyer claims to be a stranger from Hicksville, Ohio.
The speculators who bought a swamp
Of the 23,040 acres of Hicksville Township, about 14,000 were entered by the Hicks Land Company and over 4,000 by the American Land Company in 1835-37, all on speculation, in the hope of selling before the lands became taxable five years later. The land was low and wet, so the companies chose to build a town, and Ephraim Burwell was told to be cautious in picking a town site and to put up a road from the Maumee. Burwell lost heavily, the companies sent Alfred P. Edgerton from New York in 1837, and he found two cabins and a shanty store; the first cabin in the township off the town plat was raised on a Sunday because all the men worked by the day or month and could not spare another day. Then the crash of 1837 came and land sold below the government price of $1.25 an acre; Edgerton, who was building and spending large sums, sold no land at all in 1838. The first lots and the mills came slowly, and in 1839 he finished mills costing $20,323 that burned a year later.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
