How Hemlock began

Hemlock began life as Coal Dale, a post office opened June 15, 1869 to serve a new coal-mining settlement in Perry County; on July 15, 1872 the community was reestablished and renamed Hemlock, for a grove of hemlock trees near the original town site. Its post office ran for over a century, closing October 3, 1986. Its population was 581 in 1900, the highest in the census record, and has fallen since, to 142 in the 2020 census.

Settled 1869 (as Coal Dale), platted 1872 (renamed Hemlock).

Where the name comes from

Named for a grove of hemlock trees standing near the original town site when the community was reestablished under that name in 1872, replacing the earlier name Coal Dale.

Before the town

No Native village, mound or treaty site specific to Hemlock is documented. The 1883 Perry County history places the Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware) and Wyandot as the principal occupants of the county generally, camping temporarily along Sunday and Monday creeks and near the Great Swamp, in the wooded, hilly southeastern part of the county where Hemlock later stood.

Nations recorded here: Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Timeline

  1. — A post office named Coal Dale opens June 15, marking the start of the settlement.
  2. — The community is reestablished as Hemlock on July 15, named for a nearby hemlock grove.
  3. — The Ohio Central Railroad reaches Rendville and Corning in 1879-80, opening the Sunday Creek coal field; new mines open at Rendville, Corning, Borbec, Buckingham and Hemlock and the output of the Sunday Creek valley, on the line, is expected soon to reach five or six hundred cars a day.
  4. — A branch road built in late 1880 and early 1881 from the main line below Corning up the west branch of Sunday Creek reaches Buckingham and Hemlock, where new mines are opened and nearly eight hundred skilled miners are imported from Germany to work them.
  5. — Hemlock is described as a small village in the eastern part of the township with a post office, a store, a woolen mill and a number of private residences.
  6. — Population peaks at 581 during the coal boom.

  10. — Census population recorded at 142, down from 155 in 2010.

Stories

From Coal Dale to Hemlock

The settlement began as Coal Dale (spelled Coaldale in Wikipedia), a post office opened on June 15, 1869. The post office was reestablished as Hemlock on July 15, 1872, and the village was named for a grove of hemlock trees near the original town site. The Hemlock post office closed on October 3, 1986. A branch rail line built in 1880 and 1881 to Buckingham and Hemlock carried the coal of the Sunday Creek valley. The census counted 581 residents in 1900, the highest recorded, and 142 in 2020.

Eight hundred miners from Germany

When the Ohio Central Railroad reached Rendville and Corning in 1879 and 1880, the coal of the Sunday Creek valley was suddenly within reach of the lake and eastern markets. In the latter part of 1880 and early 1881 a branch road was built from the main line below Corning up the west branch of Sunday Creek to Buckingham and Hemlock, and the 1883 Perry County history reports that new mines were opened there and 'nearly eight hundred skilled miners' were brought in from Germany to work them. The same history estimates that five to six hundred cars a day would soon be shipped from the valley. Hemlock itself, which had been called Coal Dale when its post office opened in 1869 and was renamed in 1872, was by 1883 a small village with a post office, a store and a woolen mill. Its population reached 581 in 1900 and was 142 in 2000 and again in 2020.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Hemlock, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

49,646 days of records, 1887-08-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-01): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-01 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
