Lakes near Harrison
The history under the water: the valley before, the dam, the stories. All Ohio lakes
How Harrison began
Harrison, on Hamilton County's western edge along the Whitewater River, was founded in 1810 and named for William Henry Harrison, then a militia general and later the ninth U.S. president. A stagecoach inn called the Eighteen Mile House, doubling as a post office, was already standing by 1800, and Ohio's fifth governor, Othniel Looker, built a house nearby in 1804 that still stands on New Haven Road; both are on the National Register of Historic Places. The Whitewater Canal reached the town during its 1836-1847 construction, and on July 13, 1863, Confederate cavalry under John Hunt Morgan passed through Harrison as part of its raid across southern Ohio. The town incorporated in 1850 and became a city in 1981, growing slowly through the 19th century (173 residents in 1830, 1,560 by 1880) before reaching 12,563 by 2020.
Settled by 1800 (Eighteen Mile House already standing), platted 1810, incorporated village, 1850; city, 1981.
Where the name comes from
Harrison was named for William Henry Harrison (1773-1841), a decorated general in the Northwest Indian War and War of 1812, later Ohio and Indiana Territory legislator and, briefly in 1841, the ninth president of the United States.
Before the town
No Native village, mound, or documented encounter specific to Harrison itself was found in the sources consulted.

Stories
A governor's house on the road out of town
Othniel Looker had already lived several lives by the time he built his house east of Harrison in 1804: born in 1757 in New Jersey or New York, he enlisted as a teenage private in the Revolutionary War, taught school in Vermont and New York, served in the New York State Assembly, and only then moved to Hamilton County in 1804, the same year he raised his new home. He worked his way up through the Ohio legislature over the following decade, and as Speaker of the Ohio Senate he found himself elevated to governor almost by accident on March 24, 1814, when sitting governor Return J. Meigs Jr. resigned mid-term to become U.S. Postmaster General. Looker's governorship lasted less than nine months; he lost the next election decisively to Thomas Worthington and never held the office again. But the house he built as a private citizen outlasted his brief turn at the state's highest office by more than two centuries, restored today by Harrison's own village historical society and opened to the public as one of the town's two federal-era landmarks, alongside the roadside inn known as the Eighteen Mile House that had already been standing on the same road for years before Harrison existed as a town at all.

Mostly estimated. Only 2% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Harrison - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
43,529 days of records, 1896-09-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
