How Findlay began

Findlay grew up around Fort Findlay, a War of 1812 stockade built in 1812 by Col. James Findlay under General William Hull's orders to guard the road through the Great Black Swamp; the settlement took the colonel's name. Joseph Vance and Elnathan Cory platted the town in 1821 on the Blanchard River, and it became Hancock County's seat, incorporating as a village in 1838 and a city in 1887. The discovery of natural gas in 1884 and the roaring Karg well of 1886 touched off a boom that grew the village of about four thousand into a city of eighteen thousand before the fields petered out around the turn of the century. Today it is the county seat and home to the University of Findlay (founded 1882), still centered on the Main Street core built up during the gas-boom years.

Settled 1812 (Fort Findlay established), platted 1821, incorporated village 1838; city 1887, by Joseph Vance and Elnathan Cory (town lots, 1821); Col. James Findlay (fort, 1812).

Where the name comes from

Findlay is named for Col. James Findlay, who commanded the second regiment in the War of 1812 and, under General Hull's orders, built the road and stockade (Fort Findlay) that sheltered troops crossing the Great Black Swamp.

Before the town

When Benjamin Cox settled at Fort Findlay in 1815, eight or ten families of friendly Wyandot were living around and in the old fort's blockhouses under the chief Kuqua, tilling two fields on the south bank of the Blanchard above and below the fort; the county's 1903 history says the Wyandot had a small village on the site of Findlay, and that these families later removed to the Big Spring reservation. The Blanchard's Fork Reserve that the 1817 Treaty of the Maumee Rapids (Fort Meigs) gave the Ottawa lay along the same river, with Lower Tawa Town at present Ottawa in Putnam County; the Ottawa of Blanchard's Fork sold it under the 1831 Treaty of Miami Bay and moved west, first to Kansas and later to Indian Territory. Fort Findlay itself was built in 1812 amid armed resistance to American expansion in the region; Wikipedia's Fort Findlay article notes no pitched battle occurred at the fort itself, but Capt. Arthur Thomas, who had garrisoned it, was killed and scalped near Bellefontaine after the war while traveling home. No source we found identifies a named Native town, mound, or earthwork specifically within present-day Findlay's boundaries.

Timeline

  1. — Col. James Findlay builds Fort Findlay, a stockade with corner blockhouses, on orders from Gen. William Hull during the War of 1812.
  2. — The Treaty of the Maumee Rapids cedes most remaining Native land in northwestern Ohio, including the Findlay area, while reserving the Blanchard's Fork tract, on the same river, to the Ottawa.
  3. — Joseph Vance and Elnathan Cory lay out the first town lots of Findlay on the site of the former fort.
  4. — Findlay incorporates as a village.
  5. — Dr. Charles Oesterlin, who had argued for decades that natural gas lay beneath the village, and other townsmen incorporate the Findlay Natural Gas Company to drill for it.
  6. — The Karg gas well roars in on January 20; once lit, its flame could be seen, the county's 1903 history says, fifty miles away on a cloudy night.
  7. — Findlay is chartered as a city amid the natural-gas boom.
  8. — The current Hancock County Courthouse is built at a final cost of roughly $511,000, its ornate style shaped by the county's new oil-and-gas wealth.
  9. — Songwriter Tell Taylor writes 'Down by the Old Mill Stream' while fishing on the Blanchard River near Findlay.

Stories

A fort with no battle

In 1812, with the United States at war and the Great Black Swamp a treacherous barrier to moving troops north, Col. James Findlay built a stockade and corduroy road at the site that would become Findlay. The fort had blockhouses at each corner but occupied barely fifty square yards, garrisoned by a company under Capt. Arthur Thomas. Historian Jacob A. Kimmell later wrote that, so far as anyone knew, no battle was ever fought at Fort Findlay and that garrison duty there was 'monotonous and irksome.' The irony is that the war's dangers caught up with the garrison only after peace: Captain Thomas and his son were killed and scalped near Bellefontaine while heading home to search for lost horses. The fort that saw no fighting nonetheless gave the future city its name and its first reason to exist.

The gas boom

For decades after its 1821 platting, Findlay was an unremarkable county seat. That changed in 1884, when Dr. Charles Oesterlin, who had long insisted that gas lay beneath the town, organized a company to drill for it, and again in January 1886, when the Karg well roared in with a flame that could be seen fifty miles away on a cloudy night. The village of about four thousand people grew almost overnight into a city of eighteen thousand, funding the elaborate 1886-1888 courthouse still standing downtown. The boom did not last: the gas fields declined by the early twentieth century, but the buildings, wealth, and civic institutions it left behind shaped the city for generations after.

Almost every day here is a measurement: 96% of them come from a rain gauge standing inside Findlay itself.

48,818 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-02): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-02 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
