How Fairview Park began

Fairview Park's land was part of Rockport Township, created in 1819 and first permanently settled by Samuel Dean and Datus Kelley; the township's first school stood on what is now Lorain Road as early as 1840. Sources disagree on the community's early municipal history: Wikipedia has an 1903 Rocky River-affiliated hamlet splitting in 1910 into a northern Rocky River and a southern Goldwood (later Fairview Village and Parkview), while the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History instead has the village of Fairview incorporating directly out of southern Rocky River in September 1910. Utilities arrived progressively -- electricity in 1913, gas in 1916, streetlights in 1921, Cleveland water in 1923 -- and the whole community was unified and renamed Fairview in 1948, becoming the city of Fairview Park in 1951 after passing 5,000 residents, with the outlying Parkview section annexed in 1967. Cleveland families moved in after the 1947 opening of the Fairview Shopping Center on Lorain Road, and the compact Cleveland suburb of about 17,300 today includes the Fairview Community Park Historic District among its National Register listings.

Incorporated 1903 (Rocky River hamlet, per Wikipedia) or 1910-09 (village of Fairview, per the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History); 1951 (city).

Where the name comes from

The community passed through several names before settling on Fairview Park. Wikipedia's account has it as part of Rockport Township, then an incorporated hamlet tied to Rocky River (1903), then Goldwood after a 1910 split, then Fairview Village in its northern section and Parkview in its southwestern section by 1925, unified as Fairview in 1948 and renamed Fairview Park upon becoming a city. The Encyclopedia of Cleveland History instead has the village of Fairview incorporating directly out of the southern portion of Rocky River in September 1910, following the division of the hamlet of Goldwood, with a southwestern section remaining separately as Goldwood until renamed Parkview in 1925; both accounts agree on the 1948 and 1951 (or 1950) unification and city dates, and on Parkview's 1967 merger.

Before the town

No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Fairview Park. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.

Stories

A city stitched together from three names

Few Cleveland suburbs changed identity as many times as Fairview Park before settling on a final name. Its territory started as part of Rockport Township, created in 1819 not long after Samuel Dean and Datus Kelley became among its first permanent settlers; the community that grew up on the township's southern edge spent the following century passing through the names Goldwood, Fairview Village and Parkview before finally unifying as Fairview in 1948. Economic hardship in 1929 briefly raised the question of giving up altogether and annexing to Cleveland, an option residents turned down. It took until 1951 for the city of Fairview Park to be formally incorporated and until 1967 for the last holdout, Parkview, to formally join. What finally pulled scattered Rockport Township farmland into one coherent suburb was less a founding vision than practical convenience: the 1947 Fairview Shopping Center on Lorain Road, which gave former Cleveland residents a reason to move to a place that, for nearly half a century before that, had not been able to settle on what to call itself.

Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
