How Delta began

Delta grew from settlement in the 1830s, with a post office opening in 1837, and incorporated as a village on August 3, 1863. It sits astride the boundary of York and Swan Creek townships in southern Fulton County. Delta's oldest surviving landmark is the Fulton Lodge No. 248 Masonic temple, a three-story Italian Renaissance Revival building raised on Main Street in 1894 after a village-wide fire two years earlier, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

Settled 1830s, incorporated August 3, 1863.

Timeline

  1. — The Trowbridge family, with John S. Trowbridge called the pioneer of Delta, settles nearly a mile west of the present village; two other families, the McQuillings and the Lewises, live on the creek banks by 1838.
  2. — A post office called Delta begins operating.
  3. — William Meeker establishes a post office named Delta on the S. H. Cately farm in Swan Creek Township, which serves York Township residents until it is moved to the hamlet in 1842.
  4. — Eli Kitts comes from Maumee City and opens a store at or near the present site of Delta; he dies the next year, when the hamlet counts four families, the McQuillings, McKaskeys, Zedakers and Woods.
  5. — A plank road through the township spurs the growth of Delta, and within a year the Lake Shore Railroad follows.
  6. — Fulton Lodge No. 248 of the Free and Accepted Masons is chartered, one of the oldest lodges in its Masonic district.
  7. — The Delta Independent Press, founded earlier that year, reports in its tenth issue that Delta now has railway connection to Toledo.
  8. — Delta incorporates as an Ohio village.
  9. — Delta holds its first election for mayor, recorder and five trustees as an incorporated village.
  10. — Martin H. Butler and David C. Teeple found the Bank of Delta; a large cheese manufacturing plant is established in 1869, and the Farmers National Bank follows in 1900.
  11. — The council grants the Delta Natural Gas Company the right to lay gas pipes along the streets and alleys.
  12. — A village-wide fire destroys much of downtown Delta, including the lodge's earlier temple building.
  13. — A fire starting in John P. Holt's livery barn on Mill Street, just south of the Hotel Central, sweeps up Main Street and nearly wipes out the business section; the engine house is also damaged and a new town hall follows.
  14. — The Fulton Lodge No. 248 Temple, a three-story brick building in the Italian Renaissance Revival style, is built on Main Street to replace the lodge's fire-lost building; it remains the tallest building in Delta.
  15. — The telephone system is established in Delta; on August 31, 1901 the council gives the Toledo-Bryan Air Line Railway the right to build along Main Street.
  16. — The census counts 3,316 people in Delta, which lies across the York and Swan Creek township line.
  17. — Fulton Lodge No. 248 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, described as the oldest building in the village.

Stories

Rebuilt Taller After the Fire

Delta's Freemasons had already been meeting for decades under their 1854 charter when fire tore through the village in 1892 and took their lodge building with it. Rather than rebuild small, the lodge went up in 1894 as a three-story brick building in the Italian Renaissance Revival style on Main Street at Lincoln Street -- and in doing so became, and by the documentary record remains, the tallest building in Delta, a distinction an 1890s Masonic temple has held for more than a century in a village that has otherwise grown considerably around it. The building survived long enough, and intact enough, to be named the oldest structure in the village and added to the National Register of Historic Places in February 2021, a fire-scarred village's oldest landmark turned into its newest listing.

The fire of August 18, 1892

Delta's business section stood mostly in wooden buildings along Main Street when, on August 18, 1892, a fire started in John P. Holt's livery barn on Mill Street, just south of the Hotel Central. It ran rapidly up Main Street and almost wiped out the main business district. The village engine house, a frame building, was damaged and later collapsed, which the 1920 county history says cleared the way for a town hall more in keeping with the importance of the place. The Masonic hall was among the losses, and two years later Fulton Lodge No. 248 put up its three-story brick temple on Main Street, the building listed on the National Register in 2021. The village, which had been incorporated since 1863 and already had two banks and a railroad, rebuilt in brick.

49,294 days of records, 1891-10-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
