How Casstown began
Casstown is a village in Lostcreek Township, Miami County. It was laid out in 1832 by Rankin Westfall and Luke Daney on land of James Frazee and called Trimmensburgh for Trimmens, a man who helped lay it out; the name was later changed to honor Lewis Cass, and a post office called Casstown opened in 1846. Daniel Knoop built its first brick house, only fourteen feet square, and the village was known in 1880 for selling no liquor within the corporation and for sending an entire company of soldiers to the Civil War, who received the personal thanks of President Lincoln. The 1839 Casstown Lutheran Stone Church is on the National Register, and the village had 270 residents in 2020.
Platted 1832, by Mr. Trimmens (original plat, as Trimmensburgh; the 1880 county history credits Rankin Westfall and Luke Daney).
Where the name comes from
Originally platted in 1832 as Trimmensburgh, named for its founder, Mr. Trimmens, according to Wikipedia (the 1880 county history says Rankin Westfall and Luke Daney laid it out and Trimmens only helped). It was later renamed Casstown to honor Lewis Cass, the American military officer, politician, and statesman.

Stories
The Casstown Lutheran Stone Church
The Lutheran congregation at Casstown was formed by many members who had moved from Pennsylvania. At first they had no building of their own and met in the village's Methodist Episcopal church. Work on the stone church began in 1839 and was finished in 1840, and the Lutherans used it for about 27 years. In 1867 the congregation built a bigger brick church and moved there, and the stone building was changed into a house. The old Casstown Lutheran Stone Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 1984.
A dry town with a company of soldiers
By 1880 Casstown, a village of 375 people at the southeast corner of Lost Creek Township, was, in the county historian's words, 'noted for civility and good morals'. Not a drop of liquor was sold within the corporation, and it had three churches and a hall of the Odd Fellows. The village had been laid out in 1832 as Trimmensburgh for a man named Trimmens who helped survey it, and was renamed for Lewis Cass; Daniel Knoop built its first brick house, a small affair only fourteen feet square, and opened a store that his widow was still living above in 1880. During the Civil War, small as it was, it sent out an entire company of soldiers, who did good service around Washington and, the history says, received the personal thanks of President Lincoln. A few miles north, the same account notes, was a cluster of houses called Sodom or Peucetown, with no post office.

44,511 days of records, 1893-07-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.
