How Brunswick began

Brunswick Township was first settled in the spring of 1815, with Solomon and Frederick Demming arriving on March 4 of that year to build the township's first cabins; a wave of families followed that summer and fall. Local tradition gives two competing explanations for the township's name -- that it was drawn at random from a hat, or that it was chosen deliberately for Brunswick, Germany, for its pleasant sound. The township's first post office opened in 1820 with Dr. Seth Blood, its first physician, serving as postmaster. A farming township through the 19th century, it grew slowly until the postwar Cleveland suburban boom reached it in the mid-20th century; the city and Brunswick Hills Township split off from the old township on the same day in 1960, the city incorporating as a village on February 1 and chartering as a city on October 2. Today it is Medina County's largest city by population, a residential suburb about 20 miles southwest of Cleveland.

Settled 1815-03-04 (Solomon and Frederick Demming, first settlers), incorporated 1960-02-01 (village); 1960-10-02 (city), by organized as Brunswick Township within the Connecticut Western Reserve.

Where the name comes from

Two explanations for the name are recorded in local histories and neither is confirmed as definitive: one holds that the township's name was drawn at random from a hat during an early organizational meeting; the other, that it was chosen deliberately for Brunswick, Germany (Braunschweig), because it had a pleasant sound to the settlers choosing it.

Before the town

No Native village, mound, trail or documented encounter site specific to Brunswick Township or the modern city has turned up in the sources we checked. The 1881 county history describes the township, seventy years before its telling, as home to "the rude deer-skin wigwams of the Indians" and their trails and hidden game lairs, and recalls bands of Indians in war paint passing through during the War of 1812 period, but names no specific village, camp, mound or dated encounter tied to this particular township. The township lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve land that stayed formally closed to settlement until the 1805 Treaty of Fort Industry extinguished Native claims west of the Cuyahoga River; the county-level history file carries the fuller treaty context and the one specific, dated Native encounter located anywhere in Medina County -- Potawatomi hunters meeting a squatter in neighboring Liverpool Township in 1810.

Timeline

  1. — The Connecticut Land Company purchases the Western Reserve, including the future Brunswick Township, from the state of Connecticut.
  2. — Solomon and Frederick Demming arrive in the township, erect log cabins and begin clearing land for corn, potatoes and a garden, the first white settlers.
  3. — John Hulet, Seymour Chapin, John Stearns, Andrew Demming and Henry Bogue arrive with their families and settle in different parts of the township.
  4. — Brunswick Township organizes within what becomes Medina County.
  5. — The township's population is recorded at 167 in Medina County's first census.
  6. — Settlers petition for a post office in the township; the request is granted, and Dr. Seth Blood, the township's first practicing physician, is appointed first Postmaster, with the office located at his residence.
  7. — Township population peaks at 1,417 for the 19th century before beginning a long decline as farm families left for cities.
  8. — Brunswick incorporates as a village, splitting from the old Brunswick Township, which becomes Brunswick Hills Township on the same reorganization.
  9. — Brunswick charters as a city.
  10. — City population reaches 27,645, a 74.4 percent increase over 1960 as Cleveland's suburban growth reaches Medina County.
  11. — Cuyahoga Community College opens the Brunswick University Center, an extension campus in the city.
  12. — A tornado rated a high-end EF1 or EF2 strikes Brunswick.

Stories

A Name Drawn From a Hat

Nobody in Brunswick can say for certain where the township's name came from, and the two stories that survive don't agree. One account, repeated in local histories, holds that early settlers organizing the township in 1815 simply drew the name Brunswick out of a hat along with the names of other townships being carved out of the Connecticut Western Reserve that year -- a common enough practice when Yankee proprietors needed to fill in a map faster than they could debate it. The other story credits a more deliberate choice: that the name was picked for Brunswick, Germany, because settlers liked how it sounded. Either way, the name stuck through a century and a half as a quiet farming township, until Cleveland's postwar suburban growth finally reached it and, on the same day in 1960, split the old township into the city of Brunswick and the separate Brunswick Hills Township that surrounds it.

From Farm Township to Cleveland Suburb

For its first century, Brunswick Township grew the way most of rural Medina County did: slowly, and mostly on foot or by wagon. Its population climbed from 167 residents at the county's first census in 1818 to 1,417 by 1850, then leveled off and even declined through the later 1800s as young families left worn-out farms for cities and the western frontier. That pattern held until well into the 20th century. Then, in a single generation, Cleveland's postwar suburban expansion reached Medina County: Brunswick split from its township and incorporated as a village and then a city in 1960, and its population nearly tripled by 1980 to over 27,000. By 2020 it stood at more than 35,000 -- Medina County's largest city -- a transformation from farm township to bedroom suburb that happened almost entirely within living memory.

Building a Barn Without Whisky

In Brunswick's earliest years, no barn-raising was supposed to happen without whisky on hand for the crew, and Capt. John Stearns found out how firmly his neighbors believed it. He had everything ready and a day set for raising his new barn when word went around that not a drop of whisky could be bought or borrowed anywhere in the township -- the nearest supply was in Tallmadge, a two-day round trip. His neighbors grumbled that he should have seen to it earlier, but on the appointed day they showed up anyway, went to work, and raised the barn regardless. The settlers made, in the old account's words, "the fortunate discovery that a building could be safely and speedily built without the use of whisky," and after that it became unremarkable to see a Brunswick barn go up dry.

Mostly estimated. Only 13% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Brunswick - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

48,358 days of records, 1893-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
