How Brooklyn began

Brooklyn is the last independent remnant of Brooklyn Township, organized June 1, 1818 on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River, the rest of which was absorbed over the following century into Cleveland and the villages of Brooklyn Heights, Cuyahoga Heights, Linndale, and Newburgh Heights. The suburb itself became Brooklyn Village on March 16, 1927 and incorporated as the City of Brooklyn in 1950. It grew fast after World War II, from about 1,100 residents in 1940 to a peak of 13,142 in 1970, and became nationally known in 1966 as the first American community to require seatbelt use, and in 1955 as the site of Elvis Presley's first concert north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Incorporated Brooklyn Township organized June 1, 1818; Brooklyn Village incorporated March 16, 1927; City of Brooklyn incorporated 1950.

Where the name comes from

No source we reviewed explains why Brooklyn Township took that name when it organized in 1818; the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History and Wikipedia both use the name without giving its origin. It is a gap in the record, not a settled fact.

Before the town

No source we reviewed identifies a specific, named Native American village, mound, or treaty site within present Brooklyn. Brooklyn Township covered all of Cuyahoga County west of the Cuyahoga River in its early years, land within the range of the Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot, and other nations who used the river corridor -- a boundary of real significance, since the January 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville both used the Cuyahoga River itself as part of their cession lines, placing the west-bank land that became Brooklyn Township on the still-unceded side of that line for a time. The nearby Old Brooklyn area (now a Cleveland neighborhood, also formerly Brooklyn Township) records a 1790 trading post kept by fur trader Joseph Du Shattar on the west bank of the Cuyahoga; no source found here places that post specifically within present Brooklyn rather than elsewhere in the old township.

Nations recorded here: Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot.

Stories

A mayor's 51 years, and a city of firsts

John M. Coyne served as Brooklyn's mayor from 1948 to 1999 -- the longest consecutive term of service by any mayor in the nation, according to the Encyclopedia of Cleveland History -- presiding over the city through its entire postwar transformation, from a village of about 1,100 people to a settled suburb of 11,000 to 13,000. Under his long tenure Brooklyn picked up a run of small national distinctions: it was the first American community to require seatbelt use, in 1966, decades before Ohio's own statewide law; it hosted Elvis Presley's first concert north of the Mason-Dixon line at Brooklyn High School in 1955, an event significant enough that some of the original acts returned for a 50th-anniversary show in 2005; and it later claimed the first municipal cell-phone law for drivers, in 1999. The city has also, at different times, been home to two small airports -- Brooklyn Airport, whose site later became a shopping mall, and Mather Airport.

A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
