How Berea began
Berea was founded in 1836 by educator John Baldwin along with Methodist circuit preachers James Gilruth and Henry Olcott Sheldon, on Connecticut Western Reserve land where Revolutionary War veteran Abram Hickox and his nephew Jared Hickox had already settled by 1809. Residents reportedly settled the town's name by coin flip between 'Tabor' and 'Berea,' the biblical city from Acts winning out. Baldwin began quarrying sandstone from the Rocky River creek bed in 1838, launching an industry that made Berea the self-proclaimed 'Grindstone Capital of the World,' shipping grindstones by the Erie Canal and later rail until concrete construction ended the trade in the late 1930s; the old quarry pits are now Baldwin, Wallace and Coe lakes. Baldwin's Baldwin Institute (1845) and the Methodist German Wallace College (1866) merged in 1913 into Baldwin-Wallace College, now Baldwin Wallace University, still home to the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, the country's first collegiate Bach festival. Berea is today a Cleveland suburb of about 18,500.
Settled 1809 (Abram and Jared Hickox), platted 1836, incorporated 1836, by John Baldwin, James Gilruth and Henry Olcott Sheldon.
Where the name comes from
Community members considered naming the new town 'Tabor,' for the biblical Mount Tabor, until Henry Sheldon proposed Berea, for the city in the Book of Acts (17:10-11) where residents were praised for testing scripture for themselves; unable to agree, the founders reportedly settled the question with a coin flip, which came up Berea.
Before the town
No source we reviewed names a specific Native American village, trail or burial site within present Berea. The area lies within the Connecticut Western Reserve, secured for settlement by the 1785 Treaty of Fort McIntosh and the 1795 Treaty of Greenville.
Timeline
- — Abram Hickox, a Revolutionary War veteran, and his nephew Jared Hickox settle the area after finding surveyor Gideon Granger's plot markers.
- — John Baldwin, James Gilruth and Henry Olcott Sheldon found Berea, choosing the name by coin flip over 'Tabor'; the founders first attempt a utopian 'Community of United Christians.'
- — John Baldwin begins quarrying sandstone from the Rocky River creek bed, launching Berea's grindstone industry.
- — Berea grindstones begin shipping out via the Erie Canal.
- — John Baldwin founds Baldwin Institute, open 'regardless of sex, race, religious creed, or ability to pay'; it becomes Baldwin University in 1855.
- — German Wallace College is established in Berea.
- — The Cleveland Stone Company operates Quarry No. 6 in Berea, part of a sandstone industry that has made the town's dimension stone a regional building material.
- — Baldwin University and German Wallace College merge into Baldwin-Wallace College, now Baldwin Wallace University.
- — Berea's sandstone quarries close as concrete displaces cut stone in construction; the pits later become Baldwin, Wallace and Coe lakes.
- — Baldwin Wallace establishes the Riemenschneider Bach Institute, the first collegiate Bach festival in the United States.
- — Berea's population peaks at 22,396.
Stories
The Grindstone Capital of the World
John Baldwin, who had already founded Berea in 1836 and would go on to found its namesake college, started quarrying sandstone from the Rocky River creek bed in 1838, and the industry he began outgrew everything else the town would ever build. Berea sandstone turned out to be exceptionally well suited to grindstones -- abrasive enough to sharpen tools and mill grain, consistent enough to cut reliably -- and by the 1840s the town was shipping them out via the Erie Canal, then by rail once the railroad reached town, to customers across the country and beyond; Berea dimension stone also went into buildings across the region. The town took to calling itself the 'Grindstone Capital of the World,' a claim with real industrial weight behind it for the better part of a century, until the spread of concrete construction in the 1920s and 1930s finally undercut demand and closed the last quarries by the late 1930s. The empty pits filled with water and became Baldwin, Wallace and Coe lakes, still bearing the names of the industry and the institution that grew alongside it, now used for recreation rather than stone.
A coin flip and a utopian start
Berea's founders -- educator John Baldwin and Methodist circuit preachers James Gilruth and Henry Olcott Sheldon -- did not simply plat a town in 1836; they first tried to build a religious utopian community, the short-lived 'Community of United Christians,' and later attempted a Lyceum village organized around education, both of which dissolved even as the educational impulse behind them persisted. Even the town's name came down to chance: with 'Tabor' and 'Berea' both in contention, the founders are said to have flipped a coin to let the decision stand, and Berea won. That same educational ambition outlived the failed utopian schemes: Baldwin's 1845 Baldwin Institute, explicitly open to students 'regardless of sex, race, religious creed, or ability to pay,' and the 1866 German Wallace College, merged in 1913 into what is now Baldwin Wallace University -- an outcome closer to the founders' original vision than either the coin flip or the failed communal settlements might have suggested it would reach.

| Deepest snow on the ground | 5 February 2009 — 20.12 in |
Mostly estimated. Only 4% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Berea - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.
56,914 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-28. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
