How Bay Village began
Wikipedia's account of Bay Village records that Erie people lived in the area before European-American arrival around 1600, and that the wider territory including present Bay Village, Avon, Avon Lake and Westlake was known in a Native language as Xeuma, 'those who came before us.' Joseph Cahoon settled in the area in 1810, within what was then Dover Township; landowners in northern Dover separated to form Bay Township in 1901 and Bay Village incorporated in 1903, becoming a city in 1950. The Cahoon family's last descendant, Ida Marie Cahoon, left her home and 115 acres to the city on her 1917 death, creating Cahoon Memorial Park, while Standard Oil partner John Huntington's lakefront estate became Cleveland Metroparks' Huntington Reservation. Bay Village is best known nationally as the site of the July 4, 1954 murder of Marilyn Sheppard, whose husband Sam Sheppard's contested conviction and 1966 Supreme Court reversal in Sheppard v. Maxwell reshaped American law on pretrial publicity.

A trial the Supreme Court called a carnival
In the early hours of July 4, 1954, Marilyn Sheppard was bludgeoned to death in the bedroom of the Bay Village home she shared with her husband, osteopath Sam Sheppard, who said an intruder had knocked him unconscious twice and that he had chased the assailant to the lakeshore. The Cleveland press turned the case into a sensation before trial even began -- the Cleveland Press ran an editorial headlined 'Why Isn't Sam Sheppard in Jail?' that July -- and on December 21, 1954, after a nine-week trial and four days of deliberation, a jury convicted Sheppard of second-degree murder. He spent a decade in prison before the U.S. Supreme Court, in the June 6, 1966 decision Sheppard v. Maxwell, voted 8-1 to overturn the conviction, ruling that the trial judge had let a 'carnival atmosphere' of press coverage and an unsequestered jury deny Sheppard a fair trial -- a decision that reshaped how American courts manage pretrial publicity ever since. At his retrial that November, with the jury sequestered this time, Sheppard was acquitted after just 12 hours of deliberation. Popular culture later linked the case to The Fugitive, though the show's creator, Roy Huggins, always denied any connection.
An estate becomes a pumping station, a park and a preserve
Two of Bay Village's defining public spaces trace back to single wealthy 19th-century families who chose, in the end, to give their land away rather than let it be subdivided. Ida Marie Cahoon, the last local descendant of settler Joseph Cahoon, died in 1917 and left her family home and 115 surrounding acres to the city, creating Cahoon Memorial Park. Around the same period, Standard Oil partner John Huntington's Lake Erie summer estate passed instead to the growing Cleveland Metroparks system, becoming Huntington Reservation -- and the water-pumping tower Huntington's estate once needed to serve the property still stands within the reservation today, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a small working relic of a private lakefront estate now open to the public.
