How Avon began

Avon is the northeastern-most township of Lorain County, Town 7 in Range 16 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, drawn in 1807 by the Connecticut judge Pierpont Edwards. Noah Davis put up a cabin on the lake shore road around 1812-13 and vanished from the record; the settlement that lasted began in 1814 when Wilbur Cahoon and families from Montgomery County, New York, cut a road along the ridge. The township organized as Troy in 1818 and was renamed Avon in December 1824, soon after Lorain County was formed. The township incorporated as a village in 1917 and became a city in 1961; farms and orchards gave way to suburban growth, from 7,241 people in 1980 to 24,847 in 2020.

Settled 1812 or 1813 (Noah Davis, lake shore, left within a year); summer-fall 1814 (Wilbur Cahoon, Nicholas Young and Lewis Austin, the permanent settlement), incorporated 1917 (village), 1961 (city), by Wilbur Cahoon and party (Montgomery County, New York).

Where the name comes from

The informal name before 1818 was Xeuma; at organization on 27 October 1818 the township was called Troy; in December 1824, on the petition of forty citizens, the Lorain County commissioners changed it to Avon (Boynton's 1876 address and the 1916 centennial history both give 1824; the 1879 county history prints 1834, which looks like a misprint, since Lorain County itself was only created in 1824). None of the sources consulted says why Avon was chosen.

Before the town

The 1916 county history describes antiquities that the settlers found and destroyed: a circular embankment of small piled stones, six to eight feet high and about four rods across, on the west bank of French Creek in section 11; farther down the creek an enormous mound of cobblestones in a part of the township where such stones do not occur; and a number of mounds on the ridge where the Methodist church later stood, which held human bones when opened. All were leveled or carted away for stone, and the history says nothing now marks the spot; their builders are not identified. No Native village is named. The lake shore here was crossed by an Indian trail along the sand beaches, which the Cleveland-westward mail route followed on foot in 1809; the 1916 county history says so directly. Wikipedia says only that Wyandot, Ottawa and Erie peoples lived in the region before settlement, though Erie presence this far west is uncertain.

Nations recorded here: Wyandot, Ottawa (Odawa), Erie (uncertain).

  • Burial mounds on the ridge at the Methodist church (mound) — The ridge where the Avon Methodist Episcopal church later stood, before settlement (culture unspecified) (archive.org)
  • Lake shore Indian trail (later the Cleveland-west mail road) (trail) — along the beach ridge and lake shore through Avon township, before 1807; used by the mail carrier on foot in 1809 (archive.org)

Timeline

  1. — Connecticut judge Pierpont Edwards draws Town 7, Range 16 (Avon) in the Western Reserve land draft, with three Bass Island tracts in Lake Erie attached for equalization.
  2. — The mail between Cleveland and the west is carried along the lake by a man on foot, following an Indian trail on the sand beaches; the road through Avon ran close to the lake bank.
  3. — Noah Davis builds the first log house in the township on the lake shore road and leaves within a year; the 1916 history calls him Avon's mysterious first settler (1812) and the 1879 history dates him 1813.
  4. — Wilbur Cahoon, Nicholas Young and Lewis Austin leave Montgomery County, New York, with five horses, four yoke of oxen and cows, and reach the end of the ridge road at Dover in the fall.
  5. — Leonard Cahoon, son of Wilbur and Priscilla Cahoon, is born, the first white child born in Avon township.
  6. — Wilbur Cahoon builds the first sawmill on French Creek in section 11, which ran for about fifty years; in summer 1818 he adds a gristmill near it.
  7. — Wilbur Cahoon sows the first wheat in the township, on section eleven, after a corn crop the season before.
  8. — Nancy Ensign and Orrin Ensign convey about 686 acres to Wilbur Cahoon for $2,000 (Cuyahoga deed, filed 8 May 1816).
  9. — William Richmond marries Rhoda, adopted daughter of Reuben Cooper, the first marriage in the township; Joel Terrell of Ridgeville performs it.
  10. — A Baptist church is organized after the missionary Elder Hartwell preaches at Cahoon's house; a log schoolhouse follows in 1818.
  11. — Lydia M. Williams, daughter of Larkin Williams, dies, the first death; at her wish she is buried under a chestnut tree on the knoll that became the center cemetery.
  12. — Cuyahoga County commissioners set the township off from Dover as Troy Township; the first election is held on 9 November 1818.
  13. — On the petition of forty citizens the Lorain County commissioners change the name from Troy to Avon.
  14. — Dr. Heman Williams becomes the first postmaster when the Avon post office is established (the 1879 history believed 1835).
  15. — Wilbur Cahoon dies of apoplexy; the first frame house in the township, built on his homestead, is finished in 1836.
  16. — John Schwartz and his family arrive from Bavaria, followed by Jacob Miller and Paul Faber; German settlers soon fill the south of the township.
  17. — A steam saw mill and a steam flour mill are built in Avon to replace the failing water-powered mills on French Creek.
  18. — The Nickel Plate line is built nearer the lake than the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern and serves Avon, Sheffield and Brownhelm as well as Lorain.
  19. — An electric interurban line is built through Avon Township by Tom L. Johnson.
  20. — Cahoon descendants hold a centennial of the 1814 settlement, at which Horace J. Cahoon reads the township history.
  21. — The township incorporates as a village.
  22. — The electric interurban closes and its rails are sold; the car barn is later turned into a motel.
  23. — Avon becomes a city.
  24. — Avon, with 6,002 people at the 1960 census, must accept city status.
  25. — Population rises from 7,241 in 1980 to 11,446 in 2000, 21,193 in 2010 and 24,847 in 2020.

Stories

Xeuma, Troy, Avon

Before it was organized, the lake township was called Xeuma by the people who lived there, though on paper it still belonged to Dover in Cuyahoga County. When Cuyahoga's commissioners set it off on 27 October 1818 they named it Troy. The name proved a nuisance, and in December 1824, forty citizens petitioned the new Lorain County commissioners to change it to Avon. Boynton's 1876 address and the 1916 county history both print 1824, but the 1879 county history prints 1834 for the same sentence, apparently a misprint. No source says what Avon was named for.

Noah Davis, the man who left

The first white settler on the Avon lake shore was Noah Davis, who built a log house beside the road that carried the mail westward from Cleveland and was gone within a year. The 1879 county history dates him 1813 and admits it could not learn where his cabin stood or who his family were. When the 1916 history revisited him it dated him 1812 and compared him to the man in the iron mask, a mystery that would 'ever remain.' His cabin did not go to waste: Gaston Young moved into the Davis cabin when he arrived, one of the first permanent lake-shore settlers along with Adam Miller.

The Cahoon cavalcade of 1814

In the summer of 1814 Wilbur Cahoon, Nicholas Young and Lewis Austin set out from Montgomery County, New York, with five horses, four yoke of oxen and cows, bound for Town 7 in the sixteenth range. They stopped in Dover at the end of the ridge road and waited while a road was cut along the ridge to section eleven, where Cahoon had chosen land bought from the surveyor Orrin Ensign. His son Leonard was born on 1 December 1814 and became the township's first native-born white child. Cahoon planted a hundred apple trees the next spring and sowed wheat in the fall of 1815, but he died suddenly of apoplexy in 1826, before the family's frame house was finished. A hundred years later, on 10 September 1914, his descendants gathered for a centennial at which his grandson Horace read the township's history.

Mostly estimated. Only 5% of these days come from a gauge standing inside Avon - the rest are worked out from the nearest gauges around it, so read them as close estimates rather than readings.

56,916 days of records, 1871-01-01 to 2026-10-30. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-11-02): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-11-02 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.

How did Avon, Ohio get its name?

The informal name before 1818 was Xeuma; at organization on 27 October 1818 the township was called Troy; in December 1824, on the petition of forty citizens, the Lorain County commissioners changed it to Avon (Boynton's 1876 address and the 1916 centennial history both give 1824; the 1879 county history prints 1834, which looks like a misprint, since Lorain County itself was only created in 1824).
