  1. Hymn Sing at the Lauber Hill Meeting House

5 to 6 p.m. · This event sponsored by the Museum of Fulton County will bring the community together to celebrate the rich musical legacy of early Swiss-French-German immigrants from the Rhine River Valley. The event will highlight the distinctive a cappella and four-part harmony traditions brought to the Midwest by Anabaptist and Reformed pioneers of the 1830's. Participants will sing both English and German hymns from the Ausbund (the oldest continuously used hymnal in the world). This hour long event preserves the culture of Lauber Hill's ancestors and will include some favorite holiday hymns. No Admission · From Fulton County Visitors Bureau

How Archbold began

Archbold was established in 1855 when the railroad reached the site in southern German Township, and grew from 373 residents in 1870 to over 4,500 today. Its name most likely honors railroad promoter John Archbald, though a rival local tradition holds it blends the names of two other railroad officials, Arch and Bald. The village is now best known as home to Sauder Village, the living-history museum founded by furniture manufacturer Erie J. Sauder, and as the site of one of Ohio's deadliest grade-crossing disasters, the January 4, 1948 collision that killed ten schoolchildren.

Platted 1855, when the railroad reached the site.

Where the name comes from

Most likely named for John Archbald, a railroad promoter, though an alternate local tradition holds the name is an amalgamation of 'Arch' and 'Bald,' the names of two other railroad officials involved in bringing the line through.

Before the town

No Native village, mound or trail specific to the ground Archbold occupies was located in the sources we checked. The village sits in German Township, inside the tract ceded at the 1807 Treaty of Detroit.

Stories

Thirteen Children on a Bobsled

On the morning of January 4, 1948, a farmer near Archbold hitched a bobsled behind his tractor to carry thirteen schoolchildren to class, a routine winter trip on rural roads without buses. At an unguarded railroad crossing, the sled moved into the path of a New York Central passenger train running an estimated 80 miles an hour toward Chicago. The train struck the sled directly. Ten of the thirteen children died and the other three were injured; investigators concluded the disaster came down to a failure of judgment at the crossing rather than any mechanical fault. It remains, in the documented record, the single largest loss of life in Fulton County's history, and it stands as a stark reminder of how ordinary a rural school commute could turn fatal in the era before crossing gates and school buses became standard on township roads.

A Cabinetmaker's Retirement Project

Erie J. Sauder never finished more than an eighth-grade education, but the Mennonite cabinetmaker from Archbold built one of the country's largest ready-to-assemble furniture businesses after leaving his job at the local Archbold Ladder Company to start his own shop in 1934, at first turning out church pews and plain tables. The company he founded, and the sister Sauder Manufacturing Company he added in 1954, together employed more than 3,200 people by the time of his death in 1997. What he chose to do with his retirement says as much about the man as the furniture empire: rather than simply stepping back, Sauder started Sauder Village, a living-history museum in his hometown built to depict nineteenth-century Ohio life for visitors who would otherwise have no way to see it. The museum he founded on retiring from the company he founded working has outlived him by decades, and today draws visitors to the same village where he was born in 1904 and died in 1997.

Estimated, not measured. No rain gauge has ever stood inside Archbold, so every figure here is worked out from the gauges around it - the nearest ones weighted most. Treat them as close estimates rather than readings.

49,307 days of records, 1891-10-01 to 2026-10-29. Source: NOAA NCEI GHCN-Daily, 3,240 gauges in and around Ohio. A day is "gauged" when a gauge standing inside the boundary reported it, and the value is the mean of those gauges. Otherwise it is interpolated by inverse distance from every gauge reporting within 50 miles. Nothing is carried forward, back-filled or smoothed. Against NOAA nClimDiv county monthly precipitation over 136,848 complete county-months (checked 2026-10-31): correlation 0.9515, median absolute difference 0.217 in a month. Built 2026-10-31 from the Cracked Buckeye precipitation archive. Snow is the softer number — snowfall is measured by hand with a ruler, no agency publishes a gridded county snowfall series, and blowing snow defeats every observer.

Facilities are placed on the map from Ohio EPA's own map layers, EPA's Facility Registry, coordinates written in the filings, or a geocoded street address. A permit filed under a private person's name (most are household septic systems) is counted but never named, placed or linked; licenses for individual workers and open-burning notices are left out entirely.
