Life story

Roger Staubach was born in Cincinnati in 1942, the only child of a shoe and leather salesman and a General Motors secretary, and grew up in Silverton, a northeastern suburb. He attended St. John the Evangelist school and Purcell High School, where he played baseball, basketball and football and graduated in 1960. A Naval Academy recruiter who came to Purcell to look at the team's center noticed Staubach on game film; after a prep year at New Mexico Military Institute he entered Annapolis in 1961 on an appointment from U.S. Representative Donald D. Clancy. He won the 1963 Heisman Trophy, served a year as a Supply Corps officer in Vietnam, and joined the Dallas Cowboys as a 27-year-old rookie in 1969, winning Super Bowls VI and XII and entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. He built a commercial real estate firm, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2018, and in 2023 threw the first pass at Staubach Stadium, the first home field of his old high school, now Purcell Marian.

Stories

Found on someone else's game film

Staubach wanted to play for Notre Dame, and when it passed on him he decided on Purdue. A Naval Academy recruiter, named Rick Foranzo in this source, came to Purcell High School to sign the team's center, and while watching game film he noticed the quarterback instead. Staubach had no interest in a service academy at first, but the recruiter persuaded him to visit Annapolis, and he liked the school's strong moral environment. His entrance exams showed a weakness in English, so he spent a year at New Mexico Military Institute, where he also led the football team to a 9-1 record. His plebe year at Annapolis was miserable: homesick, he piled up 150 demerits in four months, but after soul-searching at Christmas he got only 20 more.

Home on Hackberry

Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati had never had a home field of its own. In January 2022 the school announced that the complex would be named Staubach Stadium for its 1960 graduate, and it broke ground in May with Mayor Aftab Pureval present. Donors including Harry and Linda Fath, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Purcell class of 1970 helped pay for it. On August 17, 2023, Staubach stepped into the stadium for the first time and played catch with the current players. The next night, before a sold-out crowd, he threw the ceremonial first pass and the Cavaliers beat Deer Park 40-22 in their first game at home.
